Summary: A Beautiful Gem of a Cookbook
Comment: Being only 86 pages in length it is a rather smallish cookbook but here it's definitely quality over quantity that counts! Starting with an intorduction and detailed glossary (with photos) of all the grains, Miriam goes on to describe around 46 recipes (from soups through salads, main courses and some great desserts) all accompanied by "laid-back" but mouth-watering full color professionally styled photos. And the slim volume is so... so... sexy actually! Sinuous and attractive. It does make a great difference that it was in fact genuinely Printed In Italy!!! A nice volume for any type of cook. Am now searching for the other titles in the Gourmet Pantry Cookbook series.

Summary: A pleasant surprise from what I had been expecting
Comment: When I ordered this book, I wasn't quite sure what to expect. Since it was a bargain book, I didn't expect a whole lot, but I'm always looking for a new cookbook. I was pleasantly surprised when it arrived.
The book isn't thick, which is kind of nice. There are 8 recipe sections, soups, salads, main dishes, side dishes, breads and cereals; and desserts, as well as an introduction, a glossary of grain types, an index, and a conversion table. The glossary of grain types is very nice, it include colour pictures of the grains, as well as a short description of each.
There are 40 recipes in the book, and I counter at least 25 colour photos of the dishes, and most of these photos take up at least half a page, if not more. The dishes all look fantastic, and even those without pictures have names that sound wonderful, such as chedder cheese grits with green onions and garlic, or spicy corn-meal covered catfish with cilantro salsa.
The recipes all seem fairly straightforward, and don't seem to involve a lot of complicated work or unusual ingredients. Every receipt centers around some kind of grain that is simple. You're not going to need to go to the exotic foods store to pick up most of these grains, just go to the local store and pick up your oatmeal, cornmeal, rye, or other grain. The author mentions a few of these grains can be found at a health food store, so there is a chance you'd be able to find them in the organic foods section of a large supermarket.
