Summary: Ethnographies of two South Indian villages compared
Comment: Here's a brief comparison of Alan R. Beals, "Gopalpur, A South Indian Village", Holt, Rinehart and Winston, Inc., 1962 (first edition), and S.C. Dube's, "Indian Village", Harper and Row, 1967, two complimentary ethnographic studies of South Indian villages located about 90 miles apart.

The material for Alan R. Beals' "Gopalpur, A South Indian Village", was gathered in 1959-60. S.C. Dube's research for the "Indian Village" (of Shamirpet) was carried out in 1951-52.

"Gopalpur, A South Indian Village" (1962) offers good data and the looser, if uneven, writing style makes it a more 'tasty' read than Dube's "Indian Village". However, Beal's presentation of the Gopalpur material is disorganized and the comparisons to other villages which appear at the end of the book seem tacked on. Beal surprised this reader with a few unsubstantiated assumptions in the section on religion but otherwise seemed to stay with the facts.

In "Indian Village" S.C. Dube systematically reviews essential elements of Shamirpet village social structure, religion and economy. Dube is meticulous in his presentation of information and provides a well organized, if dry, presentation. From what I gather, this book is out of print and hard to find.

Together "Gopalpur, A South Indian Village" and an "Indian Village" give the reader a better picture of South Indian village life as it was in the 1950's and early 1960's.
