Summary: EXCELLENT First Novel....
Comment: I was amazed that this first novel was so good. Elaine Flinn has a wonderful career ahead of her with this series!
"Dealing in Murder" features Molly Doyle (a.k.a. Elizabeth Porter), a Manhattan antique dealer specializing in art, who moves to Carmel, CA to start over after her husband leaves her for another woman. Unfortunately, he takes her reputation with him, as he has been forging art with his new woman and Molly is implicated as well. The art world is very exclusive and elite so Molly devises a 5-year plan where she will be able to make enough money in Carmel to ultimately start a new business in New Orleans.
Almost immediately, Molly inadvertantly visits a woman who has just been fatally stabbed. In the exclusive, posh community of Carmel, murder is rare and Molly immediately becomes a suspect in the eyes of Chief Randall. Coming from a long life of cops, herself - Molly becomes involved in the case.
Flinn has given us AMAZING characters. Molly is bruised, ashamed, and DETERMINED to get back on top in the antique world. She is bitter and has isolated herself from other men. She has something to prove. Chief Randall is a hardened cop who has no illusions about any "goodness" in mankind. For the most part, he just wants to do a good job until retirement.
The array of minor characters is SUPERB as well. Flinn has provided a firm foundation on which to build. I especially was intrigued with Molly and Bitsy's relationship. Most authors would have devised having these women become fast friends and solving the case together. Instead, Flinn has opened the door for a realistic and evolving friendship with Bitsy - that I look forward to reading about in future sequels.

Summary: An intricate web of antiques, art, and murder
Comment: Molly Doyle is trying to start a new life for herself in Carmel, California, running an antique shop for an old family friend. Molly, aka Elizabeth Porter, is running from her past in New York City, where she was one of the city's premiere antique dealers but was accused in an antique fraud scheme with her ex-husband. Although she was cleared of the fraud charges, she feels she must start over and re-build her professional reputation. As (bad) luck would have it, though, within weeks of arriving in Carmel, Molly finds herself at the scene of a murder, with a woman she has met only once dying in her arms. Then, a few days later, another murder happens with Molly again on the scene. As the local authorities investigate the murders, Molly is drawn into the investigation in order to clear her name. Plus, she discovers some interesting connections between the murder victims and some overpriced art being sold in a local gallery......Could she have discovered another fradulent scheme??
Well, I won't say any more about the plot except that it is a fabulous, twisting ride! The plot developments come quickly and keep the reader guessing the outcome. Definitely not too much time is spent on antique trivia, just enough to spice up the story. Loved the trip to the auction in San Francisco! Ms. Flinn did a good job describing teh auction and the antique store, makes you feel like you're there.
The characters in this story were super! Molly fights depression and self-doubt, and anger over her failed marriage, only to emerge determined to overcome all the obstacles and accusations against her. Other characters in the story were strong and well-developed. I hope they will all be returning in the next installment of Molly's story.
The biography of Ms. Flinn says that she was an antique dealer for many years. I hope she will stick with her new career of writing! I'm looking forward to more adventures and antique finds with Molly Doyle.

Summary: Extremely disappointing
Comment: Although well-written in terms of style, this book has both a weak plot and weak characters. Throughout the book, antiques dealer Molly Doyle and the police chief interact in a variety of unrealistic ways, and Doyle throughout displays few of the intellectual characteristics a real high-powered business woman would need for success. The plot is creaky and obvious and, again, the suspects act as two-dimensional figures. Argh!
