Title: What Paul Really Said About Women: The Apostle's Liberating Views on Equality in Marriage, Leadership, and Love by John T. Bristow ISBN: 0-06-061063-8 Publisher: Harper SanFrancisco Pub. Date: March, 1991 Format: Paperback Volumes: 1 List Price(USD): $13.00 |

Summary: Completely non-biblical
Comment: This book completely leaves out most texts that Paul writes to Timothy and Titus. This book's author does not believe in the infallibility of scripture. In many cases the author uses God's Word in a haphazard manner. When a scripture is obviously discussing a woman's role to be the helper and supporter of her husband, the author will...try and make the scriptures say something else.
If you don't want to believe in gender roles established in the Bible by lying to yourself, then this book would be a great read for you. However, anyone truly seeking what God says about biblical manhood and womanhood would be much better served to read elsewhere...

Summary: Take It With a Grain of Salt, If You Like
Comment: To some extent, yes, this man is looking for what he wants to see. However, he makes some excellent points about the Bible. First, Bristow points out that we must remember that the Bible has been translated and re-translated over the course of centuries. Second, while some may disagree, he points out that we must look at the time in which the text was written, the audience, and the problem that the letter was addressing. Even if Bristow isn't a specialist in ancient Greek, and you don't believe that some of the words mean what he thinks they mean, you can take some excellent ideas away from this book. I would recommend it to anyone who has an open mind, enjoys thoughtful theological discourse, or who is looking to see how the Bible could possibly pertain to her (or him, for that matter).

Summary: This is just an attempt to "fix" something you don't like
Comment: Please, I encourage you, try to do your homework and read what the other side has to say about this issue.
As Prov 18:17 tells us, "The first to present his case seems right, till another comes forward and questions him."
There has been a strong attempt to "revise" the plain meaning of Scripture to make it different than it is. If you do NOT read up on this issue, but ONLY read the new "let's FIX the Bible" side, you can be deceived.
READ THIS, then read it again, with a pen and notepad in hand: "Recovering Biblical Manhood and Womanhood: A Response to Evangelical Feminism" edited by John Piper and Wayne Grudem
Head means head, not flow. Obey means obey. Submit means submit. And "no" still means "no" - believe it or not!
THIS WOMAN'S VIEW: "Women and the Word of God: A Response to Biblical Feminism" by Susan T. Foh
For the issue of marriage, a woman's view: "The Excellent Wife: A Biblical Perspective" by Martha Peace
A RADICAL woman's view, but still worth reading: "Me? Obey Him?: The Obedient Wife and God's Way of Happiness and Blessing in the Home" by Elizabeth Rice Handford
A BASICALLY NON-RELIGIOUS viewpoint: "The Surrendered Wife : A Practical Guide to Finding Intimacy, Passion, and Peace with Your Man" by Laura Doyle
