Summary: The Courage to Call for Reformation
Comment: John Shelby Spong has articulated well the arguments for why reformation is required within the Christian faith and church, and, he succeeds in presenting an effective starting place to consider the form and future direction of Christianity.

He calls for another reformation not because he is against the Church or devout faith, but exactly the opposite: he cares deeply for religious life centered around God, Jesus, and church and understands that today's vestiges of religious life are simply uncompelling and ineffective in the post-modern world.

He is part of a growing segment of the world's Christian population that consider themselves "believers in exile." He has the courage to raise questions and introduce / re-introduce ideas that point to a more authentic understanding of God and Jesus. He does this despite the fact that it threatens the age-old power structure of Christianity, of which he was a member of for his entire working career.

His realistic and to-the-point approach is refreshing in a world where the religious powers and "faithful" continue to wear blinders, afraid that they might actually have to rethink old concepts, rituals, and beliefs. Relinquishing your security blanket, even if it is a false security, is not an easy thing for anyone to do.

He advocates a natural, inclusive, and peaceful reformation. But also, it is a required reformation that is needed to save the faith from irrelevance, and ultimately extinction.

I'm glad Spong wrote this book. For the first time in my life, despite a Christian upbringing, I can begin to develop a relationship with God and Jesus. I imagine I'm not alone in this result. It's hard to imagine a more holy path than living fully, loving deeply, and have the courage to be all you can. To walk in the light of God is within the reach of all. Jesus points the way.

Summary: Spong's latest really resonates
Comment: For years, I have been a searcher, trying to find a way to participate in Christianity, but repelled by conflicting texts and questioning the paradoxes of a merciful God and the concepts of heaven versus hell, damnation and all the many components of Biblical text that are either unbelievable or not palatable to someone who doesn't advocate sexism or racism or any kind of absolutism. I also questioned how any one faith could claim truth, and how someone from a non-Christian background could be considered sinful just because they grew up indoctinated by their faith tradition. Moreover, the mystery and immensity of the universe are so profound that I knew the antiquated thinking of traditional churches and fundamentalists had to be wrong. Bishop Spong pulled it all together for me and has ignited a spirit of hope and excitement in me I have not ever felt in matters of God and Christ. The whole idea of God, instead of a theistic being with a white beard and a demand for sacrifice and submission to judgement, as the source of all life and love and being makes perfect sense to me. His thinking conveys oneness of all that is and is welcoming and open-minded and indicative of an authentic search for truth. Throughout the book he mentions that giving up the old, theistic ways of Christian thought will be hard for some. Not for me - I have been questioning their validity for many years. This book has used scholarship and compassionate, rational thinking to open up new doors for me - doors that I believe lead to God - the ultimate source of life, love and the Ground of all Being.

Summary: Always Changing, just to survive.
Comment: Spong doesn't believe much in the traditional Christian story. Nor should he if he really wants his thesis to be proven right. What a thought-provoking experience reading this book and all his other works. This is the type of book that traditional/fundamentalist Christians would like to burn at the stake.

Unfortunately, many 1-star reviewers choose to hold on to their Christian convictions are erroneously purported by the Catholic church and the modern-day protestant churches, rather than consider than consider the fact that it is more important to hold acceptance for all beliefs and accept it into mainstream tolerance. Some even mock Spong's proposals that many of Jesus's experience was later added to the Christian writings---and unfortunately for many diehard Christians, he has evidence... and not spiritual inspiration or so-called "righteousness".

Purchase this book if you want your mind stimulated and provoked by liberal ideals. It's a book that will turn your head and question the validity of your Christian faith.

Really.
