Summary: This is an honest, entertaining, crafty book.
Comment: Jane McCafferty's "One Heart" is a graceful novel, tender yet unflinching in its facing up to difficult motifs. The characters accept the dealer's distribution of cards and play their hands without complaint. McCafferty is a crafty writer who stays out of the way, letting her characters unfold in their own rhythm. She can frame casual looks and construct simple passages that resonate with lessons learned over a lifetime. There is a respect for humans here, with all their inherent sadness and beauty intact, their glitches and their guts, that is hopeful as well as finely tuned. What a pleasure. What a sensibility. I am thankful for Jane McCafferty. Oh, are honest books out of fashion this season? Never mind - read this one anyway.

Summary: Characters that live for the reader like a much loved aunt.
Comment: Very seldom do I wish to read a book twice before finding a place for it on my shelf of favorites. One Heart is such a book. Women especially will recognize themselves in the wanderings and wonderings of Gladys and Ivy as they come to terms with their lives and loves. This novel is a jewel that I hated to see end even the second time through.
Rating: 5
Summary: A heartfelt endorsement for "One Heart"
Comment: What may on the suface appear to be a bland, simple story of two middle aged sisters eeking out a living in upstate New York is really a deeply emotional, insightful tale about what happens to a life touched by tragedy. When I turned the last page of this book, I was really crying. I think anyone who has had a loss in their life will have a similar reaction.
Gladys is the one with the emotional armor that her sister Ivy can't seem to make a chink in. It's frustrating to see how cold Gladys can be to Ivy and to others that love her, but you understand why she is the way she is a few chapters into the novel. This book really made me think about my life--how it's never too late to change it and how the tragedies and losses we experience profoundly shape our lives.
