Summary: Reads like a self help book
Comment: While the book is interesting in it's exploration of the Jungian theme of the human shadow, I don't feel it was as effective as it potentially could have been. There were times when it felt like I was reading a self help book preaching to me about how I should live my life. While some of what Bly says makes sense, alot of it just seems like self help propaganda. He says you criticize people because in your shadow you're really like that person and just don't want to be. But the subconscious is a tricky thing and you can never know for sure. I critisize President Bush alot but I know for a fact him and I have nothing in common.

Summary: Good Description of the Psychologist's "Shadow"
Comment: Driven by my curiosity to learn more about the psychologist's idea of the human shadow, I purchased this book and read it easily. It is not technical, but it is very profound and deep. Based upon other reading I have done, it provides a good, basic description of the "shadow" concept.

This work does not follow a rational progression of thought. Instead, it strikes a chord of common humanity deep within the heart of the reader. It promotes inward reflection and self-evaluation.

I would only recommend this book to other Christian leaders who want to learn more about the psychologist's concept of the shadow. As a non-Christian work, it offers no lasting solutions to the human dilemma. It provides only a greater understanding of and sympathy for that dilemma.

Summary: Essential Book
Comment: This book was a text in my father's poetry class at SUNY Brockport many years ago. When I became a teacher of composition (ugh, I know...), it was a large part of my curriculum as well. This book is not about poetry, nor is it about composition. It does, however, speak to all human beings, regardless of their work in life.

I have bought copies to share with friends, and I have returned to this book so many times in my life as a reminder of the hard, good work we are urged do to in order to be whole.
