Summary: The Ersatz Elevator
Comment: The Ersatz Elevator
By: Lemony Snicket

The Ersatz Elevator is one of a series about three orphans, the Baudelaires, whose parents die in a tragic house fire. Their parents were extremely rich, and in their will they leave all their fortune to Violet- their oldest daughter. The orphans are passed around from guardian to guardian. Somehow the evil Count Olaf-their first care taker who would do anything for their fortune keep finding out where they are and always has some kind of plan to steal their fortune.

In this particular story the orphans move in with Mr. and Mrs. Squalor, a fairly wealthy couple who live in the penthouse of a very, very tall building. Guess who finds his way into their lives again?! Count Olaf or should I say Gunther his disguise name finds his way back into their lives. He throws the children down an empty elevator shaft so they can't stop his evil plan.

There are 8 main characters. In this story there there is Mr. Poe the caretaker who was almost like a social worker for the orphans. Violet, the oldest orphan who is 14 and loves inventing. Klaus who is 11, the middle orphan. He loves reading and researching. is Sunny, she is 5. She cannot talk yet but her siblings can understand her made-up words and translate them to anyone in need of translation. Sunny loves to bite things. There is also Mrs. Squalor, who is into what's "In" style and what's "Out" of style. Her husband, Mr. Squalor, just follows his wife's orders and doesn't argue anytime with anyone. Last and meanest is Gunther who is really Count Olaf but nobody recognizes him except the orphans, and nobody believes them.

My favorite character is definitely Klaus because he has the responsibility of always taking care of sunny. If something goes wrong he gets blamed. I can relate to that in a lot of different ways. One way is that I'm the youngest in my family and when anything is missing or anything goes wrong, I get the blame! I see things like that happen to Klaus a whole lot.

I love this book, I love this whole series. It has action, adventure, suspense, fiction, but also some fact and truth. My favorite part of the book was when the three children use food to leave a track so they didn't get lost inside the huge apartment. I thought that was funny. My least Favorite part of the book was at the auction and the Baudelaires are in a box and they told Mr. Squalor to vote for that box he was overthrown by another bidder. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who likes action, adventure, suspense, fiction, and some truth. Even if someone liked only one of those categories he/she would probably enjoy this book.

A Series of Unfortunate Events

Summary: ups and downs
Comment: If you scare eaily, skip this book. The Ersatz Elevator is one of the books in a series of Unfortunate Events, Wich features count olaf as a villain.Count olaf is a really mean guy who does very nasty, mean things to the Baudelair orphans.
This book starts out with the three Baudelair orphans Violet, Klause and sonny in a penthouse at 667 Dark Ave, near where the baudelairs lived before there parents died. Many strange things happen during this story. There is a secret passage, a door man who helps Count Olaf, welding torches, an auction with unusual items, and an elevator shaft(but that's no surprise given the title of the book)
Despite the nasty, mean things that that count olaf does to the Baudelairs, there are some funny parts. For instance the penthouse is so large that when they went looking for Count Olaf they droped bread crums in each room so they new they had alredy been there.
Read this book to find out if Count Olaf will be caught and be put in jail, or get away again! There are loys of twists and turns and like the title, plenty of ups and downs.

Summary: Another Sad, but Humorous, Baudelaire Adventure
Comment: The Ersatz Elevator. Lemony Snicket. New York: HarperCollins Publishers, 2001. 272 pages. US $10.99 006-440864-7

A review by Becki Engstrom, May 8, 2004

In his 6th book, The Ersatz Elevator, Lemony Snicket continues to chronicle the tragic events of the three close siblings, Violet, Klaus, and the baby, Sunny. Once again, the Baudelaires face evil and must rely on one another to survive.

This is a very sad, but humorous, tale of adventure. In the words of the author, "there is nothing to be found in these pages but misery, despair, and discomfort, and you still have time to choose something else to read". (Back cover)

However, I have endured the tragic adventures of the Baudelaire orphans since the first book; where the Baudelaires lost their parents and home in a fire. I have come to adore the three children, and, so I chose to further read about them.

The Baudelaires make a very creative team. Violet is the inventor, Klaus is the researcher, and Baby Sunny, well she just likes to bite things-anything! The orphans continuously run into trouble that involve the evil Count Olaf, whom has been after their fortune since the first book. With the orphans' creativity, they can sometimes escape this evil man.

Lemony Snicket writes with a narrator's "voice" when describing the lives of the Baudelaires. He's very concerned about what he must report to the public as you can "hear" the concern as you read. Plus, there is no need for a dictionary; the author will define a questionable term as he writes. For example, "Violet said, ... 'But they [fire tongs] still might come in handy for something. We don't know what we'll encounter in that hallway, and I don't want to come up shorthanded...' 'Shorthanded' is a word which here means 'unprepared', and Violet was thinking that three children alone in a dark hallway holding fire tongs were perhaps a bit more prepared than three children alone in a dark hallway with nothing at all." (Pg. 201)

All readers with a sense of adventure should enjoy "The Ersatz Elevator" as well as the rest of the "Series of Unfortunate Events" by Lemony Snicket.
