Title: Schaum's Outline of German Grammar by Elke Gschossmann-Hendershot ISBN: 0-07-025134-7 Publisher: McGraw-Hill Trade Pub. Date: 01 September, 1996 Format: Paperback Volumes: 1 List Price(USD): $16.95 |

Rating: 5
Summary: Excellent learning tool for German
Comment: I found this an outstanding book for learning German. The book is broken into "chunks"; e.g., one chapter on noun gender, another on the various cases, yet another on prepositions, etc. That helps me to stay focused on the material, and also to retain it. I highly recommend this book for the beginner...but advanced students might find it useful as a review tool.
Rating: 5
Summary: Useful for students of all levels
Comment: German grammar is complicated. If you learn German as an adult, you will probably always need to review the many rules that are needed to speak Deutsch correctly.
I purchased this book because I have had good luck with Schaum's guides in the past. (If you study Chemistry, Calculus, or Accounting, then you should look at the corresponding guide in the Schaum's series.) The features that I particularly like in this book are as follows:
-The book doesn't spend too much time on the really easy material; it assumes a certain level of German proficiency.
-There are many examples; the authors don't merely tell you the rules, they show you how the rules work.
-The authors have placed special emphasis on the aspects of German grammar that are the least intuitive for native English speakers.
Overall, a very useful book for any non-native speaker of German.

Rating: 5
Summary: a good grammar supplement
Comment: This book is great for using outside the classroom on your own to repeat and (hopefully!) remember all those pesky little German grammar rules that are so hard to simply memorize. It is self-explanatory and starts at a fairly simple level, ramping up gradually as it progresses. I would recommend writing out the excercises in a notebook so you can redo/review excercises that give you trouble again and again.
