Summary: Did not meet my expectations
Comment: There are many other, more complete books in the market, although not specific to women, that provide better information. There are many inacurracies and assumtions in this book about men and women that I found offensive, even as a female climber. This appears to be more a book about feminism than climbing itself. And the only topic (how to deal with menstruation) that I was really interested in knowing about, which is woman specific and that is not found in other books was not present in this book either. If a woman is really interested in learning about climbing techniques and does not want to read sexist comments and ideas, there are many other, better books in the market.

Summary: An excellent "how to" book for women in mountaineering.
Comment: This book is well written, concise, and informative. It deals with most aspects of mountaineering that could be of interest to both men and women. However, Ms. Gabbard also addresses the special issues and problems with equipment, clothing etc. that confront women in this sport. The book has alot of good advice and tips. The photos and drawings are superb. Being a woman in hiking and mountaineering, I learned alot from this book. I especially enjoyed the tale of the two women who were attempting to climb Mt. Rainier. It is exciting to see if they make it or not. I would recommend it to all women, novice or expert, who are interested in the sport of moutaineering. We need more books like this to help and inspire women to attempt to do things they may not think they can do!
