Average Customer Rating: 4.5 (22 reviews)
Rating: 5
Summary: comprehensive i-mode course
Comment: An excellent 'crash course' in i-mode. After taking Japan by storm, i-mode no doubt is the coming mobile technology in the US. This book is a well-organized walk through that technology from fundamentals through the future outlook.
Rating: 5
Summary: General Review
Comment: In a society that is more on the move than ever, there is no doubt that conveniences such as wireless access to the Internet is becoming more and more necessary. John Vacca is in the forefront of technology again. Reading this book gave me a good insight of what is coming next in the availability of Internet functions via wireless devices such as the cellular telephones. This technology has already become successful in the Japanese market and it appears to be headed to both the North American and the European markets. Today's use of I-mode for entertainment is fast expanding towards business applications. This increases its chances for widespread use in environments such as the business oriented North American markets.

Summary: Average book
Comment: I got this book as a present and I'm thankful that I didn't buy it for myself.
I would have given this book 4 stars but I just couldn't. Why?
Well, for one thing, the author repeats himself not just twice but multiple
times. How many times must he remind his readers that i-Mode allows
its users to send and receive e-mail, that i-Mode contents are transported
via a packet switched network, that cHTML stands for compact HTML and
that it's a subset of HTML? There are also numerous spelling errors giving
the impression that either the editor was too lazy, clumsy or inexperienced.
I also get the feeling that this book were written with time gaps or were patched
from different sources from differing years. There's a chapter that says i-Mode
is only available in black and white phones and then later on says it's already
available in colored phones. The same goes for Java or i-appli support. It is
as if he wrote one chapter in 2000, then took a long vacation or gathered
more magazines, clipped i-Mode articles, the wrote other chapters in 2001.
I'm not saying the book is utterly worthless but it just can't seem to decide whether
it wants to be a technical book or a business book. It would have been better for
the author to split the book two ways.
I suggest you scan a copy, read a chapter or two and you'll see what I mean.
