Title: Calculus Demystified : A Self Teaching Guide (Demystified) by Steven G. Krantz ISBN: 0-07-139308-0 Publisher: McGraw-Hill/TAB Electronics Pub. Date: 01 August, 2002 Format: Paperback Volumes: 1 List Price(USD): $19.95 |
Average Customer Rating: 2.67 (3 reviews)
Rating: 2
Summary: Calculus Re-mystified
Comment: If you think calculus is a difficult subject, this book will only convince you further. This book may be good for someone trying to brush up on calculus skills, but for those trying to learn it for the first time, it will do nothing but confuse. If you want a more easy to follow introduction to calculus, try Silvanus P Thompson's 'Calculus Made Easy'
Rating: 2
Summary: Demystified? Don't Think So.
Comment: There comes a time for many instructors when they have been studying upper level esoterica for so long that they forget what it's like to not know the basics of a subject. They assume that since the subject is obvious to them, it must be obvious to everyone. Unfortunately, this seems to be the case with "Calculus Demystified". While this book may be solid review for a former math major, a good introduction it's not.
Some may say that calculus is an inherently boring subject - this book will do nothing to disabuse you of that notion. The writing style is almost a parody of the stultifying math teacher who puts everyone to sleep. I have quite a few math texts that I use for my tutoring business, and this is by far the least accessible of the lot.
For the calculus novice, I'd recommend "How to Ace Calculus: the Streetwise Guide" as a far more readable text. For the more advanced student who wishes to review the basics or to supplement his or her Calc II or III course, "Calculus Demystified" would fit the bill.
Rating: 4
Summary: Did what I had hoped it would do
Comment: Books like this should stop trying to tell us that they "make learning more enjoyable" (a phrase I just lifted from the back of the paperback edition.) Learning calculus isn't enjoyable, except perhaps for people who picked it up quickly in school and will never need this book anyway.
The target audience for this book is the mid-life fellow like myself, who blew off anything more advanced that basic geometry in his school days/daze, never thinking he'd need more than that. Now, career prospects depend upon absorbing such material, and one just wants to get through it as painlessly as possible. The issue of "enjoyment" doesn't arise.
Silly hype aside, the book DID help me get a grasp of the basic concepts involved, for which I am grateful.
