Rating: 5
Summary: Extremely helpful. An intelligent book
Comment: This is a really top-notch book on IP design. It starts with the basics but moves up to an advanced level covering a broad range of campus, WAN, routing and switching topics. The author shows an excellent understanding of the technology coupled with a keen insight of how the industry works. He also leaves you under no illusion as to what it takes to be a good design engineer. This is the kind of book that could change your career if you took the author's advice on board.
Rating: 2
Summary: Decent content, but McGraw-Hall ought to spring for editing
Comment: Why didn't someone catch all the "author... need caption" captions that appear in here?
Anyway, this could be a useful book if you already know about networking but don't really "get" routing, and especially Cisco routing. You'd need a lot more help, and knowing how Osborne/McGraw-Hill pushes books out the door (very fast and lightly edited, if that) I'm not sure I'd trust everything in here as gospel.
I did find a good white paper that covers some of the same material from Cisco (called " Gigabit Campus Network Design--- Principles and Architecture"; I know there are others up there).
Rating: 5
Summary: Excellent treatment of the subject
Comment: This is not only the best network design book I've read, it is probably the most educational IP networking book I've come across. The author leaves you under no illusions about the complexity of advanced IP designs and details the skills that are required. He shares his insights not only on the technology (something he does exceptionally well), but he also provides a good commentary on the Industry. Apart from being an excellent on the job reference, it's also a book worth consulting before doing your next job interview!
