Title: Modern Operating Systems (2nd Edition) by Andrew Tanenbaum ISBN: 0-13-031358-0 Publisher: Prentice Hall Pub. Date: 28 February, 2001 Format: Hardcover Volumes: 1 List Price(USD): $96.00 |

Summary: Difficult to follow for beginners; missing key information.
Comment: Certainly this is not the book if you don't have knowledge in operating systems. The matter is organized in a crisp fashion. Most of the places the material is not clear: in page 91 the sentence "It then fetches the page just referenced into the page frame just freed, changes the map...". In the example that follows this sentence, the steps are not arranged in a sequence. To understand this example, the better way is to keep a pen and a paper and workout. Who want to keep a pen and a paper than understanding the matter easily from the book? Another example: in page 103, 3rd para: "If the virtual page number is present..., the same way as it would be from the page table itself". Unfortunately the author has not explained read-only pages etc. while explaining the diagrams 3-11 or 3-12. As a final example, in page replacement algorithms (starts at page # 107), the concept of how the operating system identifies the required location in the secondary memory is not explained.
If you have some good knowledge in OS then certainly it is a good book to improve your breadth of understanding.

Summary: Superb book on Operating Systems
Comment: I think this book is a great book on OS. It's easy to read (don't forget Tanenbaum humor :)), it explains difficult issues using simple analogies and is certainly an up-to-date book on the field.
It has one chapter covering Unix (and Linux) and another one for Windows 2000, two of the more important Operating Systems well explained here.
The Chapter on processes and threads is great. It really clarifies the difference between processes and threads.
Although I found the book as easy to read as it can get, I must admit that I had litle bit of a hard time reading that Memory Chapter. I'd prefer it didn't had so many algoritms. I shorter chapter would probably be better, at least for me ;).
It also has a chapter on security, a must have nowdays. If you are a first-time learner on Operating Systems I think this is the one.
Rating: 2
Summary: Not an easy read
Comment: This books is a tough read, Mr. Tanenbaums explanations of concepts is very loopy and confusing at best. I have a fairly strong foundation in Operating Systems but still this book leaves me dazed. In addition to this book I have Operating Systems by Deitel and Stallings and I find that they manage to convey the concepts of OS much more clearly than Mr. Tanenbaum. I would strongly recommend against this book, even keeping it as a reference is a no-go especially considering the cost.
