Summary: Very Impressed - Good Start to Finish Tutorial
Comment: I found "Core J2ME" an excellent resource and the most up-to-date book
on J2ME currently on the market. Like other Java books published by
"Sun Press" it encompasses everything you need to get started as well
as advanced topics.
Part 1 (Chapters 1-4) gives a very good description of what J2ME is and
how it works. It also takes great care in describing everything the user
needs to start writing code such as, where to find emulators, what the CLASSPATH
needs to be set to, etc.. Also in this section Muchow describes how to use
the J2ME toolkit provided by Sun. I have found this to be the only book to
cover the use of the toolkit.
Part 2 (Chapters 5-15) cover the nuts and bolts of the J2ME API including
event handling, interface objects, and how to handle persistent storage. Through
the use of the examples I found these topics very easy to follow. The most useful
chapters in the book are "Chap 13 -Scheduling Tasks" and " Chap 14 - Generic Connection
Framework". This was the first book I found which covered the "Timer" class, which
is crucial if you want to schedule tasks or create a thread to poll the serial port. Chapter 14 is
also a must if you plan on connecting to a server with you J2ME client. I would
have liked to have seen a little more description outlining what is required for a
connection to a server, such as firewall issues, security and the role of "Wireless Gateways".
Chapter 15 was the reason I bought the book "MIDP For the Palm". It was
the only book I found which covered writing to a PDA. Unfortunately this chapter
was a little underdeveloped. Instead of covering the topics which make PDA's unique,
it just took an example from a previous chapter and showed the reader how to use
the conversion tool to create a PRC file. I realize that the whole reason for J2ME is to
abstract the differences of clients from the programmer but still I wanted to know how
the differences were being handled. Some of my basic questions were not
answered like "why are Spotlet classes sometimes used in examples I find on the web?"
or "How can the native PDA applications be accessed?" or "What considerations
are taken for the bigger screen on a PDA?". Even though I found the answer to these
questions later it could have been a lot clearer if the fact that the Palm-Profile is currently
under development was stated in the first few lines of the chapter. I spoke with the author about why he left these things out and he explained that he wanted to concentrate on only the J2ME API.
Overall I found this to be the best J2ME book on the market. It identifies for the reader
all the tools they need to get started and then takes them through some advanced examples.

Summary: Great Introduction and reference
Comment: I bought this book about two months ago when my company was starting a J2ME project. I read the first 6 chapters page for page as an introduction and then used the rest of the book as a reference. I now consider myself a proficient J2ME programmer.
I've used the book mostly as a reference and I have found that the way the chapters are laid out makes it very easy to find whatever information I'm looking for. The chapters on Record Stores are particularly useful.
One reviewer said to just read the online docs. CDLC and MIDP are not very difficult technologies to become proficient at but the documentation online will make it much harder on you. If you don't mind wasting hours of time to save [money] on this book thats fine. But if your time is valuable like mine break down and make the investment. This book and the JavaDocs will be all you need to start professional apps in J2ME.

Summary: A Must to beginners
Comment: A very nice book with lots of helpful information and code examples. When I first purchased this book I had a little information about J2ME technology and was strongly willing to learn more about it. This book helped me a lot.
...
I do strongly recommend this book to everyone who wishes to advance in J2ME...
