Summary: Journeys Series is good for Intensive English
Comment: As an EFL program administrator in Korea, I have chosen and implemented the Journeys series for 1 session of an intensive program for teaching EFL in Korea. The level 1 books are very simplistic, yet interesting enough for false beginners. One of the advantages of Journeys is that it has 4 books for each level, so you can have students focus on one skill for each hour of study. I only wish amazon carried them all! The books are : Listening/Speaking, Reading, Writing, and Grammar. The students and teachers who have used this book have all responded favorably to it. It is also a graded series, still in progress, but you can get level 2 and 3 of some skills already. The nice thing about Journeys is that it's really easy to teach and the directions in the book are clear to the students. Even though level 1 uses simplistic English for beginning learners, it doesn't treat them as idiots, as many beginning textbooks do. Journeys Listening/Speaking is particularly nice, and Journeys Writing is good for students who have done a lot of grammar translation but little actual English writing, because it starts very simply and teaches the basic techniques of English writing. It works well in the EFL environment, and I suspect it would do well in an ESL setting as well.
