Summary: This is not a history book so much as an apology.
Comment: First I will start off with the good...
Okay, now on to what is wrong with this book.
Most of the people looking to read this book, really have no choice, as it is typically assigned reading. So this isn't so much a review as it is a note of caution. Do no rely on this text as a factual account of American history.
This book is a watered down, apologetic, politically correct re-telling of history. The book spends more time talking about how how women, blacks, Mexicans, Indians and just about everyone not a white male was oppressed.
Each chapter re-tells history in a politically correct fashion so as not to offend the masses. The accomplishments of many are held in check by the atrocities committed. While it should never be forgetting that slavery played a central role in early American history, it is not what should be the focal point of an American history book taught as fact.
This book serves more as a "make-up" for all the "slanted" books written over the years. Instead of offering a balanced, objective portrayal of American history, Faragher is just as guilty as the white washed history books that came before.
The writing style is also very dry but maintains continuity fairly well. The chapters are laid out well and are easy to follow.
If you have to read this book for a class, oh well. But if you have a chance to read another book, try to find one written by an suthor with no agenda other than the imparting of objective American history; if such a thing exist anymore.
