Summary: THE single greatest achievement of man this century...
Comment: I have long viewed carrying man from earth to the moon and bringing him safely back as THE single GREATEST achievement this century (and possible of ALL history)...and this book beautifully describes in detail man's race for the moon from the beginning stages to Apollo 17, the last manned lunar visit. What an amazing accomplishment! To think that it was all done using technology more than 30 years old is almost impossible to believe. My digital watch is MORE sophisticated than the (at the time) state-of-the-art on-board computer used to land on the moon. This is just what our country needs today: something for us to root for, with heroes and those willing to risk their lives (and in some cases die) for a cause they felt was worth the risk. We have so little of that these days, and this amazing saga brought it all back in vivid detail. The tragedy of Apollo 1 on the launch pad, the incredible triumph of landing at the Sea of Tranquility in 1969, to the odd and humorous Alan Shepherd hitting a golf ball on the surface of the moon, this book chronicles a truly inspiring time in our nations history. I recommend this book to anyone who is interested in the moon race and anyone who loves the drama of real-life struggles with sometimes tragic consequences. Just a fantastic adventure, one that rivals ANYTHING in fiction, and that makes it even more impressive because it ACTUALLY happened.

Summary: New edition of the best account of the Apollo expeditions.
Comment: Chaikin's account of the Apollo expeditions is my favorite by far (and I've read about a dozen or so). His was the best when it came to what we learned in our trips, how the astronauts were trained to observe, etc. The quality shows in that the original edition of the book became the "bible" for the Tom hanks "From the Earth to the Moon" HBO series (also a good buy through Amazon.com--an unsolicited plug for both!). Sky and Telescope magazine describes this Time-Life edition as being a illustrated three-volume set. With the original text + Time-Life's usual skill at picking great shots, this should be a fine addition to your collection..

Summary: A detailed and in depth look at project Apollo and the moon.
Comment: "A Man on the Moon" is one of the best books ever written about the American push to the moon. It includes everthing from the tragedy on Apollo 1 all the way to the final lunar landing. Plus the epilouge gives details on all the moon voyagers and what the felt and saw 240,000 miles away from home. The book also includes details on the Russian moon project and the events that led to its fall. The amount of detail in this book is staggering, this can be from the extensive research Chaikin did to write the masterpiece. This book is a must read, but don't be overwhelmed by its size, Chaikin's style draws you into the book. It's hard to put down.
