Summary: Mark Holy Angels Review of audiobook
Comment: Around the world in Eighty Days is a really great book. With a wonderful and thrilling adventure and some suspense. Around the world in eighty days is about a man named Phileas Fogg makes a bet with some of his fellow club members. With 20,000 pounds on the line Phileas Fogg starts his adventure right away with his servant Passepartout. But unsuspectingly are being followed by a detective named Mr. Fix who is accusing Phileas Fogg of a robbery. After many twist and turns Phileas Fogg arrives to India where he meets a young lady who's name is Aouda. Then after that he arrives to America and travels across the plains with his fellow travelers and Mr. Fix but is attacked by some enraged Indians. After making it to New York he travels across the sea to Ireland but with only less then a day left it will be pretty hard to make it in time. Read this book to see if he makes it or if he fails. I suggest this book to any reader who likes adventure and suspense.

Summary: The Classics Still Touch Us
Comment: Yesterday my wife and I went on a short road trip with another couple. While on the trip, this couple mentioned how their son loved the book, "Around the World in Eighty Days".

Over 100 years have come and gone since Jules Verne wrote this novel. The world we live in is a much different place than the one in which he lived. Yet, his words still have the power to transport today's readers into another world of passion, romance, and danger.

MY RECOMMENDATION: Read this story to your children and grandchildren. At one short chapter each day it will make a great bedtime story and take just a little over a month to get through. You will create a special time of bonding that will stay with them the rest of their lives. Not a bad way to spend about the same amount of money you might spend at a fast food place.

Comment: I discovered why this book is a classic. The characters are fascinating, the situation is absurd, and craft is supernal. It is a great classic, and a wonderful way to get into Jules Vern's other writings.

I think the key to the book is not just the absurd bet that Fogg makes, but that Verne adds to the deadline tension by having this idiot Inspector Fix trail Fogg on his voyage around the world. Fogg not only has to combat the perils of global travel in the 1890's, but also Fix as he sabotages Fogg's journey. That is genius.

This book is all plot: you are whooshed along for the ride and it never eases up. The Chapters are short, adding to the sense of speed. The only thing offensive in this book are some of the stereotypes: Asians, Indians, Yankee Americans and Mormons are all misrepresented in this book. Alas, that is the bigotry of the Victorian era that somehow still lingers.

This is a great book for your boy who hates Jane Austin novels.
