Summary: The most moving book I have ever read
Comment: I first read "Werther" in a comparative lit class in undergrad. This novella, its simplicity, its brevity, is intensley moving. I have read this work at least twenty times. Anyone in need of emotional catharsis will have it, as they swim in waves of Goethe's penetrating words. Werther's complete lack of control, and lack of desire to control, his emotions is intoxicating. Though the novel initiated many hundreds of suicides in Austria at the time of its publication, it is not a work emoting depression. Goethe's work is exciting and leaves one longing for an adolescent emotional storm.

Summary: A truely beautiful book
Comment: One cannot sympathize with Werther, but one can easily identify with him. Perhaps this is what makes this book so wonderful. I started reading this book at 9:00 pm the night I bought it and found myself unable to put it down until I had finished it at 2:00 am. It really is that good.

Summary: It's All About Werther
Comment: The key to really enjoying this work is to focus on the character. Of course, most of the work is writing in the form of letters, which makes the task exceedingly easy. Though this book can be very depressing (to some) and involves a lot of crying and reflection, Werther is so well-developed that I must praise Goethe for such a wonderful accomplishment. Personally, I could spend hours debating about Werther. This work definitely goes beyond what it indicates (forbidden love) to reveal a lot about our intricate natures as well as being a classic work of Romanticism.
