Summary: Classic, British literature...
Comment: Oh, there was once an era when, in the fifties and sixties, government agencies could clandestinely spy on their neighbours as if they were literally peeping over the fence with a pair of those old binoculars that they were given all those years ago at Christmas. Ian Fleming, a popular writer and journalist, the creator of the all too known James Bond, 007, has clearly depicted how much Britain did spy on its neighbours in the Cold War era; he did it very well. James Bond, a smooth, kindly government agent, presumably of the MI6 calibre was given, in the first of the four stories, a quiet job in the north of the Carribean island of Jamaica. An old military man who had fought in Germany in WW2 has made friends with an all too well known German, the key to thousands of pounds' worth of gold at that. The old dog steals the gold, sinisterly stealing the life of his German 'friend' also. But has he bin tipped in? Or are there more complex reasons to the frightful interrogation that takes place on Fleming's home island of Jamaica? And one more question, I may hesitate to ask... What does happen to the bad guy once he goes back into the deep waters, off the shore of that panoramic estate that he lives on?
London. MI6 HQ. Late afternoon. 007 is stone bored. A poetic chap walks in; he's from C&E, probably Dover or Portsmouth. Long before the terrible days that were to welcome dirty bombs, cocaine and illegal immigrants, the man opens up rather a more exquisite smuggling: a Faberge egg, encrusted with the finest gold, ruby, diamond, and emerald. It came from Russia. "So what?", some of you are asking, as you read this book review: that's just what our friend Bond thinks also; until he founds out that a double agent who is also working for the KGB is expecting that little payment, so that she can sell it and make a damned frisky escape. And Sotherby's is the scene of the crime. Don't worry: James turns up on the mission, and boy does he give it all he's got.
Before the refurbishments that gave the city of Berlin discos, offices, clubs and pubs, a sinister wall divided the allied part of the city and the Soviet devoured area of it. Agent 272 is passing on information from his sorties to British agents, so that they can get an all-round view of how the scene is progressing. But there's one small problem: our Russian friends are using a nice female orchestra to carry out some real dirty work: assassination. Bond waits for three nights for 272 to turn up, until he finds that that girl he has been observing quietly, was the killer. Should he kill her? Or should he injure her? His mission is to kill; whatever he does, he scares the livin' daylights out of her...
James Bond, of the double-0 section, is peeved. He's bent sent to one of his most hated places in the world: not Moscow, not Berlin, not Vlad: New York. He hates everything about the Big Apple; its food, its shops, its agents, its people for goodness sake! A short story that encapsulates how bad NY really is does not help some readers, I am sure!
This collection of short novellas really sets the scene of what espionage is really about: not romance or fast cars, but about transporting data in a clandestine way. Ian Fleming has done a good job with this one, and I am sure he has with all of his other books. I'll award four stars; and Bond WILL be back!
