Summary: A quick and funny read.
Comment: This second book in the Miss Julia series is an amusing, quick read.Miss Julia is a fairly recent widow, who is quietly glorying in the freedoms that widowhood has brought. In defiance of her stuffy neighbours in a small Southern town, she has refused to be bullied into handing over the control of her quite substantial fortune to the elders of her church and also horrifed them by taking in her late husbands mistress,Hazel Marie and her son, Little Lloyd.Under her care, they have both blossomed and the three of them have formed a close family unit. When Hazel Marie's scheming uncle plots to have Little Lloyd given into his care, the better to gain control of the childs inheritance, Hazel Marie is kidnapped, forcing Miss Julia to hire a private detective to find her.It does tend to become a touch farcical at this point with plots littered with crooked racing car drivers, shonky church fund raisers and Miss Julia driving around a Nascar circuit and out- driving the professionals.I didn't think that this book was as good as the first, but hopefully, M/S Ross will be back to form with book 3.

Summary: If Miss Julia doesn't do it, who will?
Comment: I thoroughly enjoyed "Miss Julia Speaks Her Mind", probably because I was raised in a rural area and could relate to some of the characters and their situations. I was really expecting to enjoy this book as much, but it was a bit disappointing.

When Hazel Marie doesn't come home from a date, Miss Julia begins to panic and sets out to find her. With some help from Little Lloyd (who has grown up quite a bit from the first book) Hazel Marie is located and returned home. This happens about halfway through the book, so I was forced to wonder what the rest of the book would be about. Just as I suspected, it seemed to be mostly filler.

The first half of the book is great-- the characters from the first book return in all their splendor and we meet a few new characters. However, the second half of the book was disappointing and on several occasions I wondered where it was going or even why some of the plot was included.

All in all, I have enjoyed the Miss Julia books and intend to read the third one. I just hope it's more like the first one than the second one.

Summary: Zany and fast-paced
Comment: Zany and fast-paced like McCrae's BARK OF THE DOGWOOD, and full of charm like Flagg's FRIED GREEN TOMATOES, this book is chocked full of colorful and eccentric characters that leap off the page and into your heart. The physical descriptions of the characters alone are worth the price of admission and not to be missed. Couple this with great writing and a sense of timing (not everyone has one) and you've got yourself a great read. Highly recommended.

Also recommended: McCrae's Bark of the Dogwood and FGT
