Summary: Honey for the soul
Comment: If you liked Kaye Gibbon's "Ellen Foster" then Lily Owens will capture your heart. When her father, T. Ray, punished her by making her kneel on grits, I immediately knew that she was a survivor and he was a coward. May, June, and August Boatwright, the beekeeping sisters, and their Black Madonna honey were exquisite. May's tortured soul taught me about empathy gone awry. Sue Monk Kidd's strong southern storytelling skills are reminiscent of Reynolds Price and Harper Lee. In this her first novel, the writing isn't perfect but it tugged at my heart the way Barbara Kingsolver's "Pigs in Heaven" did. The characters, the time period and the small town setting made it similar to "To Kill a Mockingbird." This novel should be read by parents and teens together. I hope Kidd plans a sequel. I care so much about the characters that I yearn to know about their future lives.

Summary: Beautiful!
Comment: I loved this book from the first word. A girl with no mother, a black nanny, and an abusive father, who is searching for herself and the past she can't remember and her father won't talk about. She is brave and yet needs protecting at some points, which is where her old nanny comes in. They take a journey together, which helps her find out more about her mother. They end up in a home with other black women and see all kinds of personalities, but the one thing that brings all these women together is the 'black Madonna' which they reveer, only to later find out that this picture of the Madonna is just a label on a jar of honey. They find strength within themselves and each other, supporting each other all the way. This is a great book about overcoming the pain life can deal you, and the search for self and faith. Highly recommended!
