Summary: Excellent way to introduce yourself to Anais Nin
Comment: I was lucky in my introduction to Anais Nin; she came to give a talk at our dorm in college, and this book was the recommended reading. I loved her writing in the way I love M.F.K. Fisher's--it's descriptive, sensual and personal. In particular the essay on "Fez" makes you want to book a flight and travel there, anywhere, some place exotic.

Ms. Nin was famous for her liaison with Henry Miller, noted author who delved into the erotic. The essays here give insight into Nin's erotic writings, her art and philosophy. If you plan to read the diaries, I can't think of a better way to start than with these essays as a guide.

Summary: Refreshingly Honest
Comment: "I believe one writes because one has to create a world in which one can live. ~Anais Nin

It is impossible to read anything by Anais Nin and not be intellectually possessed by her love of words. Her vocabulary is magnificent and each sentence is comfortable to read. She sees such beauty in life and rarely has a writing tantrum. Now and then, you see a bit of anger peeking out, but only for a few seconds.

It is also impossible to read her books without a pen and paper in hand. She gives so many recommendations for books she enjoyed. In fact, in this book, she reviews a number of books I now must find and read.

Anais Nin was an entire world of thought. She not only embraced the sensuality of the written word, she knew how to be captivated by her travel experiences and write about them in exquisite detail. Of all the authors I've ever chanced to meet in books, this is one author I would have loved to have met in person. Fortunately they include a few of her interviews in this work.

Her reviews are rather inspiring to any reviewer and I would highly recommend this book just for the reviews. However, when you get to the section on travel, the writing is so beautiful, it is hard not to just go buy plane tickets and travel the world to wherever Anais went. You can only imagine being her best friend and traveling to all the countries she visited.

It is no wonder Henry Miller was fascinated and inspired by her. She is fascinating even now as we read about her life and experiences. She inspires me to write about the books I love because she wrote about so many books she loved. She includes brief passages and an analysis of artist and authors. There are also some brief discussions of her own books.

This is quite a tiny treasure. Within the pages you get to experience a variety of essays and reviews, not to mention the enchanting diary entries at the end.

The Writing is divided into three sections:

Women and Men
Writing, Music and Films

Enchanted Places

Each essay, journal entry or review is a world in itself. What is so refreshing is her honesty and willingness to discuss subjects others shy away from. These are issues people want to discuss and at times you are only free to discuss them with your closest friends or with a book. Anais makes you feel understood. She also found people to be fascinating studies.

Women will especially enjoy reading the first essay. Anais was so in tune with her inner goddess. She describes how women do not make the separation between love and sensuality. While a man may be more willing to engage in the sexual experience without love, a woman can be damaged by a man's insensitivity to her desire to connect on the emotional level. There are natural reasons women crave intimacy and romance.

While men seem to shy away from romance, it can bring a woman such deep pleasure to be appreciated in those ways. A bunch of flowers can make a woman blossom or ignite her into the realm of unleashed sensuality. The gift of a beautiful poem can inspire a woman to write her own poems or leave her glowing for days as she reads the poem again and again. Each time knowing the man loved her enough to find a poem or write one and therefore appreciated her on a deep level she understands.

How beautiful it is to hear authors saying what we know to be true in our own hearts. Anais was so far ahead of the entire relationship game in her understanding of how we each are man, woman and child. This is now in David Deida's beautiful works.

Anais also discusses how we change our environments and move to new homes as we ourselves evolve and how we give our gifts to the community around us in various ways. She gives us insight into how her first book was printed. This was fascinating as she had to buy her own press.

Overall, I find Anais to be a woman who had astounding insight into the basics of life and beyond. Her sheer love of writing is such an inspiration and each time I read one of her diaries or books, I am filled with a new sense of what it means to be aware of the inner world.

A book to calm and inspire or maybe even set your creative mind on fire...

Summary: Exquisite discussion of Nin's own feminism from the self
Comment: The book is divided into essay on 3 topics: Women and Men; Writing, Music and Films; and Enchanted Places. This is a very developed sense of Anais - open, radiant, and sincere as always. There are several distinct themes throughout the collection. One of these themes, and to her, the most important, is that women (and men) must first come to know themselves intimately and erotically before they can successfully contribute to any other person, group, society, or otherwise. "In denying the need of intimacy with ourselves, our extroverted culture destroys the possibility of intimacy with others." Nin openly discusses her knowledge of feminism and the roles women have traditionally held in dealing with themselves. She also voices in several essays, her opposition to women's "listing of griefs against men." She emphasizes the rebuilding of the self through poetry and eroticism. "Eroticism is one of the basic means of self-knowledge, as indispensible as poetry."

The book is full of discussion of feminism, eroticism, psychology of the self, our roles in relationships, art, and society. There are 2 fascinating interviews with Nin, several of Nin's essays on other writiers and filmmakers, and her magical recreations of enchanted places. It is a must read for Anais Nin fans. It's short, it's sweet (I couldn't put it down), and intellectually, but most importantly, emotionally fulfilling.
