Summary: An exciting find
Comment: Having a long interest in the philosophy of language (particularly Wittgenstein who raised themes that overlap with some here) it was an exciting find to happen-upon this book. What I see in both authors is an appreciation for the fact that words have many meanings: the noble endeavor to isolate the singular meaning of any given word now seems futile. This humble proposition seems to have large implications for the history of philosophy, and many great thinkers caught up in these ambitious questions. Books of the sort are not for everyone: since they comment on prior works, they are best appreciated given a background in philosophy, and exposure to the philosophy of language also seems essential (to most chapters). It is not the whole book which links to my interests noted here, and the author humbly and generously acknowledges that some chapters deal with questions that are small in the larger philosophical scheme. Still the author's style seems driven by a simple interested in advancing truth, not puffing himself up, and this seems to be an asset. Even if some discussions will be heavy for beginners, there's no comparison to the generally-cryptic Wittgenstein. Some chapters , for example chapter 3, might be of interest to students not yet exposed to the philosophy of language. If you have ever found yourself dismayed by highly ponderous discourses on, for example, the essence of 'justice' or 'love', you may be relieved to know that there is an energetic sub-field of philosophy which suggests that these questions, while noble, may not be entirely sensible.

Summary: Excellent Book
Comment: If you intrested in Philosophy, You must have that one
Rating: 5
Summary: Classic work of 'linguistic analysis' school of philosophy.
Comment: After Wittgenstein's _Philosophical Investigations_ itself, no work more clearly demonstrates the power of using language analysis to begin to clarify traditional questions of philosophy.
Although Austin was not the originator of these techniques, he towered over everyone else in the field, setting new standards of subtelty and venturing into entirely new areas of inquiry. His papers, the most important of which are collected in this volume, are brilliant, witty and powerfully intellectual. For the general reader, they will show a new way of thinking about questions of philosophy.
