Summary: NOT WHAT IT IS CLAIMED TO BE.
Comment: The New Revised Standard Version claims to be a Literal Translation, however, this vlaim is not entirely true, as several verses where paraphrased, or rephrasedd for a more liberal audince, withte feminist crowd well in mind.

The Translation takes liberties withhte text overall, altering things to suit the liberal slant of its makers, as wsell as to be apeasing to certian poliitcal concerns.

some changes are to accomodate Feminists, as said above, others to acocmodate those of a Liberal theology, and others are simpley baffling.

as an example of this, the Gender Inclusive language tends to omit words like "Brithers" "Bretheren", and "He" as well as "Son."

Jesus is not Gods son, but rather his Servent. He isnt a man, but human.

Likewise, when Paul Greets the hesselinians, thy are his "Brothers and Sisters". Lets forget the fact that this is ultimatley a first century document, and pretend that thesepeople had the same mindset bout gender inclusive languaghe as we do.

But perhaps most insulting to a male reader, the famed verse " Twp men shall work in a feild, and one will be taken", removes the word Men. However, the very next verse, which mentions women grindign grain, is left unmolested. Obviously, mentioning women wont offend women, but then, if you are goign to remove all the references ot men to make women fit in, why not do the same for men when women are mentioned? Not that I like either, mind you.I woudl prefer the text to be left alone.

Other slants include the removal in several places pf the word Hell, and Sin.

Most perplexing, the word "Understanding", which appears in MOST Bible versions, is rendered as "Insight." As in the famous 44th chapter of Proverbs, which extorts us to get wisdom, and with all our Getting to get Understanding. In MOST Bible versions it is rendered thus.Howe3ver, int he New Revised standard, it asks us to seek out Insight.

I am sorry for the crudity of this review, however, it is my first on amazon. I want this to be short and to the point. I simpley do not reccommend this book however, if you need a Bible, why not turn to the old standard, the King James Bible. It is a time tested and reliable Bible translation.superior in both poetry, and in accuracy.

Inded, only read the NRSV is the only other Bibel you have is a New world translation.

Summary: a very good literal translation of God's Word
Comment: No translation of God's Word is perfect. Each one has its flaws. Each one hopefully casts new light on God's message to us (translation is inherently interpretation). So it is with The New Revised Standard Version. There are both flaws and moments of revelation.

The Bible is full of stories about humanity's interaction with the Divine. As a whole, it is the story of God's redemption of humanity through the death of his Son: Jesus Christ. The NRSV is a rather literal translation (from the original Hebrew, Aramaic and Greek) of these stories.

The greatest weakness of this particular translation is its needless neutering of the Hebrew and Greek generic male pronouns. This cause difficulties (especially with the Psalms) when translating "he." They often pluralize such cases to "Those" and "They." This causes passages to lose personal immediacy and force.

That said, I feel the NRSV is a fine overall translation. It ranks right up there with The New American Standard Bible as the best literal translations. The NRSV has the extra benefit of having been overseen by Bruce Metzger--one of the finest modern Bible scholars.

The greatest strength (and probably the main selling point) of this edition of the NRSV is its extensive Apocrypha. Books recognized by Roman Catholic, Greek, and Slavonic churches are all included. They are placed in between the Old and New Testaments. They are divided into four sections based on who accepts them.

The Hardcover edition that I own (from Oxford Press) is extremely well made. It is far more durable than most other hardcover Bibles I have used.

If you are looking for a good literal translation of the Bible, you would be well served by The New Revised Standard Version. I highly recommend this book.

Summary: Excellent translation. Elegant English.
Comment: For my money, this is the Bible to use for prayer and devotional reading. Its language soars with majesty, unlike so many "low" translations today.
As far as the reviewer below who holds the Holy Scriptures in contempt: it is actually the atheistic/materialistic philosophies of the last century which have caused the most bloodshed. All of the religious wars throughout history combined would be only a very small fraction of the killings done in just the past 100 years in the name of secular philosophies. It is a fact. Go count the graves.
The Bible is the divine word of God. And it will be speaking to men long after the reviewer has, well, gone to his maker.
