Summary: A Top-Quality Study Bible
Comment: Oxford has greatly improved its New Annotated Study Bible. The notes are far more extensive than in previous editions. In addition to including the complete text of the NRSV in an easy-to-read typeface, this new edition contains notes pointing out information and meanings which are not obvious from just reading the text and, in places, indicating meanings from the underlying Hebrew, Aramaic and Greek texts which are not evident in the NRSV translation.
The notes are entirely scholarly and do not attempt to teach any religious doctrine.
In places, the NOAB Third Edition is less thorough in its notes than the competing HarperCollins Study Bible, but the notes are better written and far less tedious to read.
Rating: 3
Summary: Excellent scholarship but is it Christian?
Comment: The NOAB demonstrates excellent scholarship in all its features such as book introductions, annotations, articles etc. The quality of the leather editions is excellent with sewn binding and large font. I recommend this Bible for christians and non-christians who want to look at some of the literary aspects of the biblical text although the annotations contain some speculation in this area. My main concern with this Bible is that the notes make little or no attempt to discuss historic christian teachings and interpretations. These should at least be represented along with more liberal views. There is nothing in this Bible's features (except the text) that will help those searching for a closer relationship with God or for those who are hurting; lonely or struggling with some life issue. This Bible is great for the University setting but offers little where "the rubber meets the road". I guess that wasn't it's intent....unfortunately.

Summary: The second edition is much better for commentary
Comment: This Third Edition has a superior print type set and is more appealing to the eyes.
The text is still the NRSV, which overall is an excellent translation, with the exception of some inappropriate inclusive language, eg. Proverbs 30:4, which refers directly to a father/son relationship, not parent/child. This rendering totally obfuscates the allusion to the Messiah. Anyway...
The Second Edition is the one to get if you have any respect for the sacred text. Dr. Metzger was the editor and it has balanced commentary. At least the Second Edition acknowledges in 1 Cor 6:9 that the term "sodomite" refers to a male homosexual. The Third Edition tries to explain away any reference to homosexuality!!? How PC can you get? I want commentary that respects history and the Biblical Author. I can get PC mush on TV all day long.
The only reason the Third Edition gets any stars is for production quality and use of the NRSV.
