Summary: A good book on FreeBSD
Comment: There are not too many books on FreeBSD and I was glad to see another book on FreeBSD. The book is slanted for people just starting out. It covers the basics, but really the meat of the book is using FreeBSD as a server. It also covers setting up certain key services like a web server, sendmail, or samba. I recommend reading "The Complete FreeBSD" before tackling this book or "Unix for dummys" is a good Unix starter book. There are some terms and concepts used early on in the book that the reader may find a little confusing if it's his first Unix book. I do think that book does a great job of emerging the reader in the world of FreeBSD and the Unix world. The author does a great job of placing links to websites to pursue more information about software that he only briefly talks about. The author also does talk about trouble shooting FreeBSD if things go wrong, which in my experience with working with computers happens more often than I would like. The author also talked about other places you could get information, such as newsgroups, email lists, manual pages which is a very important source of information when trying to get something to work. This book now sits on my bookshelf proudly next to my 1st and 3rd edition of "The Complete FreeBSD" book.

Summary: Nice to see another FreeBSD book
Comment: In a genre where there aren't many FreeBSD books, this book provides a great look into how FreeBSD can be setup to work together with any networking equipment. The audience range of this book is pretty good, starting at the beginner level and moves up to the people who live and breathe FreeBSD; but some of the topics can cause a beginner to scratch his/her head when they first read it.

It's really nice to see the author dedicate quite a bit of the book on how to get FreeBSD to fit in next to Microsoft Windows-based workstations and servers, and even next to (not replacing) Cisco equipment. That way people can see that they won't have to replace everything that they have just to work with FreeBSD.

The book does have some typos and tiny mistakes, but almost any technical book has mistakes. Don't think the material is dry... since there is quite a bit of humor and advocacy included. Overall, great book and I hope we can see more BSD books of this caliber.

Summary: The title says everything.
Comment: If you're looking for a tutorial that will guide you to install FreeBSD and recompile the kernel, you're looking in the wrong place. If you're an experienced network administrator/user who wants to take advantage of that knowledge with FreeBSD, you'll feel in heaven.

The book is an excellent guide to set up a complete and highly reliable network server/workstation (web, ftp, mail, firewall etc.) compatible with many other OS.

There are few books that accomplish the promise they make with the title, but this is an example of a very focused work on the field the author wants to cover.

It's a good thing to support the FreeBSD project, but it's better when you get what you want for your bucks. However, you can get the "Handbook", "The Complete FreeBSD" book or "FreeBSD Unleashed" for a broader knowledge of FreeBSD, and when you feel at home with the OS, then get this book to fine tune your network services.
