Summary: A Short Book with Enormous Content
Comment: This very brief book gives one a clear understanding of major critical positions in art from the 1950s to the present while arguing that Rosalind Krauss is "our greatest philosophical art critic." Prof. Carrier is tolerant and understanding of every school of thought and gives all their due. If you are a person who is familiar with the major movements in modern art and keeps abreast of such magazines as "Artforum," the book is your cup of tea. It is not, however, for the beginner; this is criticism of criticism at its intellectual best.
Carrier surveys a wide range of opinions by major figures and does so with great economy and directness. His commentary is a demonstration of the way in which an open minded scholar can assess and discriminate among contesting views with candor but without prejudice.
