Summary: Spiritually Motivating!
Comment: "Though None Go With Me" is a spiritually motivating novel by Jerry Jenkins, portraying one American woman's commitment to live her life in obedience to God regardless of the cost. Her trials are extreme, including the deaths of all of her immediate family members, a wayward child, multiple illnesses, being misunderstood and judged by those in the body of Christ, World War I, The great Depression and World War II. She honestly struggles with her own faith and sin, but turns to God who forgives her and renews her strength. The line that ministered to me the most was "We're saved by the grace of God, Elisabeth. Living Godly is noble. But don't do it for any reason other than to thank God for the gift of grace. Otherwise, you're still trying to earn his favor." (pg. 20). It helped me to settle some of my ongoing questions concerning grace versus works. God blesses her richly in the end. Jenkins skillfully interweaves scripture and traditional hymns of the faith that bring glory to God, especially powerful if one is familiar with them. The book is a page turner, hard to put down. It dispells the common myth that if you turn your life over to God, everything is going to be just great. It hit home for me and encouraged me to keep turning to God, and God alone, regardless. I highly recommend it.

Summary: Pure Agony
Comment: I agree with the women who gave this book 1 and 3 stars. It was indeed depressing and torturous. I kept reading until the end because I thought that surely Mr. Jenkins would have some sort of redeeming message for a woman who prayed most of her life and trusted God implicitly but never seemed to get any answers to her prayers! How could her life have possibly been a testimony to those around her? Yes, we have trials in this life but is there no victory? For all of her prayers and love and sacrifice she was returned with tragedy and sorrow--time after time after ridiculous time! It was almost a joke! I got to the point where I was surprised when Mr. Jenkins had even one glimmer of a good thing happen to the main character. I felt certain that her granddaughter (the only good thing left in her life) was going to get murdered or something of that tragic nature. I have no idea why those she ministered to all her life ever got saved!! It's not that I think we have to live a life of comfort with no adversity or sorrow---I understand the message of the Bible. But whatever mark Mr. Jenkins was trying to hit---he totally missed it as far as I'm concerned. I shed no tears over this one. Read Francine River's books if you want to have hard hitting Christian fiction. Start with the Mark of the Lion series. That's Christian fiction at its best!! You will be changed and the message will stay with you for a very long time...

Summary: What??? All This Happened to ONE Person???
Comment: Elizabeth Grace LeRoy Bishop's life hasn't exactly been a walk through the park. Starting out life with only one parent, she learns as a teenager (on the same night she commits her life to Christ) that her father is dying of cancer. She is left only with a bitter, greedy aunt, but she still hopes that she can find some joy and fulfillment in her life. Soon enough, it seems that that will happen, since at church camp, Elizabeth meets handsome, kind, Christian, and too-good-to-be-true Ben Phillips. Tragedy mars that relationship as well, when Elizabeth learns on her senior high gradution day that Ben is missing in action as he fought in WW1. And her life continues in this fashion, until it seems that some sort of catastrophe has happened to everyone that Elizabeth cares about.

[...] In conclusion-this is a book that I think tries to make a valuable about being a faithful Christian no matter what, but it makes the point in a way that's a little TOO extreme.
