Summary: "Sloppy language makes sloppy thought possible."
Comment: As a student of Bauman's, our first day of class each semester always included a reference to this quote that has permanently changed the way I think and communicate: "Sloppy language makes sloppy thought possible." I read "Pilgrim Theology" for his class, and in it, Bauman lives up to his own "preaching" of this quote. "Pilgrim Theology" challenged me to develop my theology around Christ and his Word FIRST, making sure I don't adopt ideas unless they are evident in Christ. When most college kids and adults alike are developing their theology (if they're developing it at all) based primarily on denominational stances, he forces you to dig deep and figure out for yourself (no, he's not into relativism) what really is beautiful, true, and good. His content is challenging, revealing, pointed, and still humorous (in a sly, often sarcastic, intelligent sort of way). I recommend it wholeheartedly. If you want a good preview of his type of writing, check online.
