Summary: Know Your Bibles
Comment: Most denominations have a translation of the bible that works best for their faith. It is important to note that different translations take on different meanings to the people who read them. Ever wonder how there can be so much variation in one religion? Translation is a big factor. Here is a list of translations along with the denomination that commonly uses it
Catholics-- NAS, Jerusalem
Liberal Christians (Episcopal, Presbyterians, Congregationalist, ELCA Lutheran) -- NRSV, CEV, Good News (TEV)
Conservative Christians (Baptist, Evangelical, Mormon, Wisconsin and Missouri Lutheran) -- King James, NIV

Summary: This is not a GOOD BOOK, deluded people!
Comment: Oh, yeah. Everyone says the bible is a good book and that it's the word of God.
Get yourself together, people, and stop worshipping a vicious creature, who it can be proven, controls his "children" through fear and is completely authoritarian.
Every one of the right-wing wierdos I've ever listened to speak says that christianity is the foundation of a democratic society. Yeah, right. Seems more like communism to me. Right-wing wierdos probably don't even read their beloved "good book."
May i remind you as to the numerous quotes in the bible which tell the followers of God to kill homosexuals and other abnormal people or outcasts of society?
Allow me to quote Deutoronomy 21:18-19 (This is for all you christian parents)
"If a man has a stubborn and rebellious son who does not obey his father and mother and will not listen to them when they discipline him, his father and mother shall take hold of him and bring him to the elders at the gate of his town. They shall say to the elders, "this son of ours is sutbborn and rebellious. He will not obey us. He is a profligate and a drunkard. Then all the men of the town shall stone him to death. Tou must purge the evil from among you. All Isreal will hear of it and be afraid."
God sounds more like one of those dictators you keep hearing about in the news than I kind and loving father. Come out of the darkness, worshippers of foul Jehovah!
I'm just glad god isn't in charge of my country! This people, is the reason there is a seperation between church and state!
And if you think Isreal was the only place where this brutal and wicked law was ever put into effect, read the mayflower compact.
And if you still don't believe me, read exodus 22:18- "You shall not suffer a witch to live."
Many people in this day and age misunderstand what is meant by witch and slaughter and harm wiccans and practitioners of magic.
"witch" in the bible does not refer to either of these, but a person who practices the magical arts for evil purposes.
This led to the witch burnings of the middle ages and the sick, deranged trials of colonial America. And many of those slaughtered weren't even real witches, but early feminists and political opponents of those in power!
Which leads to the issue of religious intolerance: I know many of the people who read the bible on a daily basis are religiously intolerant, and will probably be the people reading this review.
But the golden calf chapter and the story of how Moses and his followers slew three thousand of the gold calf's worshippers sickened me.
Perhaps its just because of my liberal upbringing, but I see this as a horrid, hateful book.

Summary: From a Non-Christian - Read it anyway!!!
Comment: An extremely easy to understand version of the Bible translated and written to convey its meaning and lessons to late 20th century people.
Whether the Bible is truly a historical book (its really a set of books), and whether one is a believer in divine origin or inspiration of the Bible isn't necessary to gain insight into lessons about life and humankind's place on earth and their relationships with each other.
Critics of Christians should also understand that the New Testament's theme is God's "new" relationship with people, including Gentiles; and the Old Testament deals with God's relationship with Jews alone. The previously exclusive "chosen people". Those who focus on contradictions between the Old and New Testaments and the negative aspects of the stories, especially in the Old Testament, are missing the point of the Bible. It is to learn about life and one's place in it in relation to God. For the Christian, the New Testament "supersedes" the agreement with God in the Old Testament. So don't hold the Old Testament values against them. Read it anyway and learn what you can from it. Decide for yourself.
As someone said, "If it can be applied to you, learn from it. If not...don't worry about it!"
