Summary: A thought-provoking book from a cultural imagination perspec
Comment: This is perhaps one of Coker's most illuminating books, and marks his change as an author from rather guns-and-bullets strategic studies to a more eclectic blend of cultural history and literary thought (as can be seen in his later books like War and the 20th Century, The Twilight of the West, and War and the Illiberal Conscience). Coker provides an account of the different strands in American foreign policy since 1945, neatly discriminating between such movements as exceptionalism and redemptionism.
For many of his ex-students at the London School of Economics his arguments will be familiar, as his lectures on US foreign policy frequently reflected his interest in ideas and writers, the zeitgeist of an era as it were, than mere unfurnished facts. END
