Summary: A little disapointing, but it's still David Sedaris
Comment: If I hadn't already read Naked and Me Talk Pretty One Day, I'm sure I would have given Barrel Fever five stars. The main problem with Barrel Fever is that its not very consistent. Naked was insightful, Me Talk Pretty One Day was hilarious--Barrel Fever isn't sure what it wants to be.
However, that doesn't keep Barrel Fever from having some great stories and essays. The essays were stronger, and I was dissapointed that there were only four of them. Sedaris does show his trademark insight throughout the whole book--what especially comes to mind is "Season's Greeting to Our Friends and Family!!!" a great parody of those annoying Christmas newsletters. The highlight of the book is easily "The SantaLand Diaries," which recounts Sedaris's time as an Elf at Macy's.
If you're already a fan of David Sedaris you must buy this collection. Otherwise, I would recomend Naked or Me Talk Pretty One Day to begin reading one of the best writers working today.

Summary: Great collection
Comment: I first saw David Sedaris on a late night talk show and thought the story he read was hilarious. It was an excerpt from "Me Talk Pretty One Day" and the next day I went to the library and got it. I read through it in a day, laughing out loud for the better part of the book. I bought "Barrel Fever" and began to read. I must say that I thought the book was extremely funny, but not as funny as "Me Talk...". Not because Sedaris did a bad job, but because I have a preference for essays while the majority of this book is short stories. That being said, it is still a great book. Its probably not for those that don't have a dark or twisted sense of humor. If your idea of hilarity is "Family Circus" then you probably won't enjoy the book. However, if you like witty and humorous stories about alcoholics and dysfunctional families, you will like this. I showed one of my favorite parts to a friend and she replied that I have "one sick sense of humor" but she was laughing right along with me. And so if that description could apply to you, I highly recommend this book.

Summary: Okay,okay
Comment: Okay, this is not my favorite Sedaris, but compared to everything else out there it's still one of the best buys for your money.
My favorites are Naked and Me Talk Pretty, but everything the guy wrote is worth reading. His books should come with a warning that says, "Caution: may cause you to lose bladder control in public." They're side-splitting funny and well-crafted. God bless him.
Sedaris, along with Jackson McCrae and Vonnegut are three of my favorite authors.
