Comment: Herbert Hoover could never accept FDR's proposals, which he felt were not only counterproductive, but counter to the core values of a free society. In this book, he attempted (without subtlety) to defend his approach to the onset of the Depression and attack Roosevelt's; he goes so far as to say that the fear engendered by FDR's election caused the very bank crisis Roosevelt is often credited for ending. This is a good window into Hoover's mind after he had left the presidency; it is a good book to read along with Hoover's "American Individualism and the Challenge to Liberty," which was written before he took office.
