Summary: I kinda learned to key, but. . .
Comment: Where are the DVCreators.net guys to do teach people really how to use Shake?!! I went thru the book, and if you to ask me to do a project right now using Shake, I wouldnt get anything done!! Other than Keying, the lessons just told you do this or that without any real rhyme or reason. No Powertips to be found at all. I am an photographer, graphic designer, and video director and editor and was able to find out how to use Photoshop, FCP, After Effects, Illustrator, ETC by just reading good books and not paying for classes. Unfortunately for people trying to learn Shake, we have a poorly written piece of garbage only(havent taken the CMI Studio DVD's-yet).When I got the FCP Startup CD's, I knew nothing of using FCP and came out ready to edit any project because the teaching was that good-cant say the same about this. To add insult to injury, the lessons are just plain boring!!! They say that after you are done with this book, you can be ready to take an Apple certified class--what they forgot to tell you is that you are going to FLUNK!!!

Summary: Great Start at High-End Compositing
Comment: The book is fun, helps you jump into some fairly complex stuff. You're not bored with the projects, the author keeps it interesting. Its written clearly, step by step, and with some humor. I havent seen any other books on the market for Shake, and I am very pleased with this one.

Summary: Shaken' never stired!
Comment: This is truly one of the best training books I have ever read! Seriously, Its a good as learning the same fundamentals in school. The author really takes his time explaining real world scenerios, unlike many other books that seem to make up projects for you to learn. Many of the techniques in this book are things that are taking place now in the world of visual effects. I highly recommend this to beginners and advanced artist wanting to stay in tune with one of the hotest compositing softwares on the market. Big bonus: full Shake 3 license included (30 day Mac OS X vserion)!
