Summary: Not for Everyone but Something for Anyone
Comment: This is an amazing book. Vollman's writing is of the "a page of text with semicolons = 1 sentence" variety, so sometimes it seems difficult, but it challenges you to finish because the language is so vibrant and full. Each sentence however long and complicated is a work of art in itself and the whole story ties together and works in a surprising way. Maybe I'm not smart enough but after all the times I've read it, and I have read it at least a dozen times, I am understanding more every time and it is still as entertaining and confusing and beautiful as the first time.
The book is a startlingly accurate satire of America and technology and life, not in general but in very very specific ways. At 600 hundred pages, there are a lot of topics discussed as the story progresses thematically. The amazing part is that it doesn't sound trite or tired or boring like Vonnegut's over-recycled critiques of modern life and America. This is the huge pitfall of this kind of writing and Vollman is a genius in the way he has put this story together.
It's completely amazing...I first read it when it came out and am saddened to see it is out of print...but there should be some copies floating around: give it a try!
