Summary: One of the Most Important Books
Comment: Malcolm X is truly a powerful, significant, and essential work for all time. Why? Because you are able to witness how a man suffered from the effects of prejudice and his whole disposition was formed from it. You see how a very angry man stays angry at the "white devils" for most of his life. However, the unique aspect of Malcolm X is that he changed his views towards the end with the realization that his religion and own understanding gave him. This book serves as a learning experience, for one learns not only about racism and a mans struggle with it, but how to listen and read with a open mind. Many people get very offended at what Malcolm says and I can relate. However, your purpose as a reader should not be to judge Malcolm, but just listen to what he has to say, and learn from his experience. Knowledge, insight, and power of personal change are all gained from this story. I cannot stress enough the importance of having his autobiography in your memory. A highly recommended read.

Summary: This is one of the best books I have read.
Comment: Malcolm X lived a very interesting life. Yes, this was a book I was assigned to read for a class. When I first picked up the book the length intimidated me, but after reading through the first few pages I was relieved. The language and style of writing was simple and easy to understand. Malcolm X was a very influential person to many people. Malcolm's street life was very exciting and enjoyable to read about. Malcolm was a hustler on the streets of Harlem, and had many pimps, drug addicts and dealers for friends. Malcolm was latter caught for and charged for 14 counts of crime. Malcolm served 10 year in prison. While in prison Malcolm gained faith in the god Allah, and became a follower of Elijah Muhammad. The middle of the book was my least favorite because of all the preaching Malcolm would do, some parts of the preaching was interesting though. Malcolm became a Muslim, and he grew great hate for the "blue eyed, blond hair, devil white man". Malcolm's love and beliefs in the religion were very strong, and eventually changing. This book gave me a new view on who Malcolm X really was, and how he became who he is today.

Summary: What's under the surface is even more interesting!
Comment: The Autobiography of Malcolm X is a galvanizing read, not only for its riviting narrative, but also for its controversial statements. As a white American, I was forced to acknowledge that X was correct in many of his attacks on White America, and these truths made me realize I should have read this book earlier, because it explains exactly _why_ many African-Americans continue to have such hostility toward whites and why we as individuals must acknowlege this ugly legacy if there is to be any hope of establishing a dialogue between us all.
But, there is more to this book than that. This is the story of a man who lived life intensely, first as a criminal and then transformed into the nation's leading prophet and social critic. You get to know him as a naive student, a hip hustler in 1940s Harlem, a jailbird and finally, as a Muslim activist acutely aware that he is a target, a man who confronts danger in the face without compromise.
The chapters dealing with his pilgramage to Mecca should be mandatory reading for anyone desiring to understand the Moslem religion.
Alex Hailey did a wonderful job of organizing Malcolm X's remarks to make this personal history so readable. But the most fascinating thing about this book is what it leaves out.
Throughout the text, Malcolm X leaves hints of being in personal danger, of knowing he does not have long to live--but he does not say directly what that danger is or why he knows about it. There are only a few hints in the whole book. Just as he remained silent about the personal scandals of Elijah Mohammed, X chooses not to reveal the darker side of the Muslim movement, the trained assasins that eventually brought him down, and why he knows so much about their competence in killing.
This book is an essential read, and should not be limited to the category of race-related literature.
