Summary: Hope your a fan...
Comment: If you're not associated with the lore and history already present with Anne Rice's Vampire Chronicles, do not purchase this book unless you like to be confused or even bored.

I feel Anne Rice used BLOOD AND GOLD as her opportunity to further perpetuate and fill in gaps present in her earlier "Chronicle" books. If you liked THE QUEEN OF THE DAMNED especially or are at least aware of the characters and circumstances involved in that book, BLOOD AND GOLD will be much more enjoyable as the story of Mekare and Maharet, the red-haired twins, is added to and explained more fully. Also as the book centers around the character of Marius and his life story, it helps to be interested in his character, but it also helps to have read Rice's PANDORA and THE VAMPIRE LESTAT, both which involve Marius's history and are alluded to in BLOOD AND GOLD.

Anne Rice may choose not to include new readers into her realm of witches, vampires, and eroticism. By having written so many previous books, it makes a new reader feel as if they need to do their "homework," but she has created a rich world nonetheless. If you want to take up the daunting and challenging task, you will better for it, but be sure you're ready for it.

Summary: Blood and Gold = FANTASTIC!
Comment: This book is absolutely fantastic. It has it all - A wonderful, fast-paced plot -Plenty of vampires (many old faces given new life and vitality by their appearance in this book, as well as awesome new vampires) - Plenty of action - anguish driven feuds - A deliciously moving love story - truly tragic moments - and an amazing ending. It is without question the greatest thing Anne Rice has written since 'The Witching Hour' - and I'd even go so far as to put it on the same level as 'The Queen of the Damned' and 'Interview with the Vampire'.
Marius is a fantastic protagonist and Mael, a vampire that I never really payed much attention to in previous vampire chronicles, is absolutely awesome in this book. If it were a movie, I'd give him best-supporting actor.
I cannot praise this book enough. As soon as I was finished with it I let my sister borrow it. She just now called me and said 'This book is awesome!! This is the best thing Anne Rice has written in a long time!!!'
Even if you've never read one of the Vampire Chronicles, this is the perfect place to jump in. Absolutely spellbinding!!!! I only hope that Anne Rice's next novel can maintain the level of excellence found in 'Blood and Gold'.

Summary: Haven't we heard most of this before?
Comment: This novel is about Marius, my favourite vampire. Although I have quite a few problems with this book, it was still okay to read.

The problems were these:
1) most of the story line has already been told in the previous books;

2) I'm tired of all the vampires loving all the humans and always crying at the slightest provocation. They are becoming a bit too wimpy for me. Marius most often alternated between being sad and being shocked (is that the limit on vampire's emotions?)

What was also very irritating was the mention of other stories (previously untold) that Marius says that happened to him but he is not allowed to talk about them by the author. Instead, Anne Rice rehashes old plots. A bit boring.

Another irritating thing was the fact that after introducing a new and interesting vampire Thor (to whom Marius tells his story) she hardly gives us any insight into him. Not only that, but because we don't know much about Thor, the ending of the book makes no sense whatsoever, since it involves him and his history with his maker, the ancient vampire Maharet.

To sum up, a bit disappointing but okay. I say okay because I'm a big fan of Anne Rice (so I can take a lot of maudlin stuff from her), however, a casual reader would probably be irritated by this book.
