Summary: The Truth
Comment: "Nothing But The Truth", a Newbery Honor book by Avi, is written in a documentary form which leaves the reader to make decisions for themselves. It is not written from one persons point of view, which allows the reader to see everything that goes on instead of just the limiting opinions of one person. This novel really makes you think about what you see on tv or hear on the radio because it's similar to many occurances in every day life, which allows you to believe the situations and relate to the topic.
Avi somehow found a way to keep his audience interested throughout the entire novel. He moved at a pace which kept your attention because he did not reveal too much information at once. His writing technique and idea for the novel fit together well, and the ending was fantastic. I highly recommend this novel.

Summary: The Truth about "Nothing But The Truth"
Comment: The book "Nothing But The Truth" was written by the award-winning author Avi. And book received the Newbery Honor award, so you know that this combination will equal a great page-turning story. "Nothing But The Truth" is a story written in a documentary form, which allows the reader to make his or her own decision about what actually happened. Philip Malloy is a ninth-grader at Harrison High School. He isn't the best student, but has a gift for running and hopes to make the track team. But that is not going to be possible since he is not doing well English, which is taught by Miss. Narwin. Philip never like his teacher, and is so annoyed when he is put into her homeroom. In the morning the whole school in their own homerooms, listen to the National Anthem in a respectful silence. But Philip started to sing along, ticking off Ms Narwin. Was this a act of patriotism, or just plain rude? Only the reader can decide.
In my opinion I really enjoyed this storyline. It was well paced and serious with a good dose of humor. The thought of an event like the one in the book happening i real ife seems believeable, and I am sure it has happened before. The events fit well and the reader won't get confused on what is happening. The charaters are classic; the student who hates school subject and the teacher who wants to help. The point of view is third person most of the time, but become first person when Philip is talking. Overall, I believe it is a great book for Young Adult readers.

Summary: Sam's thoughts on the truth
Comment: I did enjoy this book - especially the ending. I don't want to give it away or anything but I must say that it was a very nice twist on the plot! I think that it's great for teens to stand up for what they believe in, in an organized way. Wether or not we choose to sing the National Anthem is our right. I do feel that Phillip was in the wrong though by not being quiet when Miss. Narwin asked him to. He should've gone about his right to free speech a little differently. I do like the story a lot though but personally I am not crazy about this format style. The headings and names in conversation context make it harder to read. You have to read things slowly and carefully in order to understand it or you will be confused. I would recommend this to anyone I guess. Overall I applaud Avi for her skill!
