Summary: How Free?
Comment: The book focuses on women's work in an antebellum southern town. Excluding slave women, Lebsock seems to claim working women enjoyed a certain amount of freedom and independence. She also portrays the middle class as accepting married white women as wage earners as long as their jobs paid well or the money was needed. But I have doubt about some of the conclusions as the book does not take into consideration how women's wage work affected their roles in their families and her overall positive portrayal of women's lives at the time.
