Summary: quite simply, the greatest comic ever
Comment: When a comic book wins the Pulitzer Prize, you know something's up. Not to mention my first reading of this book was in my comparative literature class in college. Maus is not just another comic book.
Maus is the true story of the author's family's struggle with the holocaust. His father directly surviving it, and the author struggling with what it has done to his family after the fact. The story is brilliantly told through the eyes of Art (the author) interviewing his father, Vladek.
At once intimate and personal, Art also pulls you away from the terror by depicting everyone as animals. The Jews are mice, Germans are cats, Americans dogs and the Poles are pigs. This contrast of a direct account told through the veil of puppetry creates some interesting situations and allows Art to tell the story in a way no other format could allow. This ploy was genius in its own way.
You can't help but become emotional with the characters. You'll feel pity for Vladek and frustration for/against Art. Never before have I grown so attached to comic characters.
Anyway, the bottom line is just read this book. Even if comics aren't your thing. The fact that this book is illustrated and uses speech bubbles is it's only tie to the world of cheesy super heroes and monsters.

Summary: Cats mice pigs dogs frogs
Comment: Maus draws you in because it is so genuinely personal. Spiegelman's comic is told by Spiegelman himself, who wants to write a comic book about his father, Vladek, who survived the Holocaust. Vladek's story is told by himself through Spiegelman. This allows for the narrative to go outside of the Holocaust, and into the author's life, his difficulty in dealing Vladek, his guilt for his mother's suicide, and the impossible task of trying to comprehend what his parents struggled through.
This is a deeply engrossing book, and because it is in comic form, few people should find it difficult to read. Both volumes can easily be read in a day or two and it should be rewarding and worth your time.

Summary: Wonderful comic book!
Comment: This book is one that caught me in its clutches instantly! For those who are interested in the Holocaust and are sick of stories of Anne Frank(no offense), this is perfect! Summary: The author of this book, Art Speigelman, goes to visit his father, Vladek, and learn of his story of living in Hitler's Europe. Art also tries to understand his father's changes that have happened due to his experiences. Art's stepmother, Mala, complains that Vladek is too uptight and doesn't care about her. Vladek complains that all Mala cares about is his money. Art's struggles show how even the children of the survivors have to survive. Review: This book took me away. For a story of the Holocaust, this hits a home run. Never before have I read a book like this. A tale like this deserves to be read by everyone.
