Summary: Timequake: unorganized entertainment
Comment: Timequake was the first book that I have read by Vonnegut. Timequake was well worth reading. I found it insightful and entertaining, all though it lacked a natural progression of plot. The book is written well, but it was hard to follow all of what was going on at times. Kurt skipped around along the timeline, from World War II on through the year 2001, which did not help the book advance. Vonnegut tells the stories of several different people, some real and some fictional, through out the novel. He also shares parts of his own life and his views on human existence in general. Vonnegut uses a universal chronological disturbance, the Timequake, as a center to the chaos of this book. He writes about the lives and times of some of the people involved in this curious event. The focus of Vonnegut's writing is a homeless author named Kilgore Trout. This story skips around a lot but it is enjoyable and well worth reading.

Summary: Ting-a-ling!
Comment: You were sick but now you're well again, and there's work to do ... Timequake is a book about a book, "Timequake One", sort of. Which is to say, Vonnegut uses the supposed book "Timequake" as reference material typically saying "I wrote in Timequake One" while filling the rest of the story with cynical bitterness and sarcastic commentary which is simultaneously hilarious and solemn. He threads the plot of Timequake (wherein the cast of the universe is forced to live ten years of their lives twice, the second "rerun" being on automatic pilot) through relentless commentary about our modern world pitting himself and his "alter-ego" out of print science fiction writer Kilgore Trout as main characters in what can be best described as part auto-biography, part fiction. As I read this book I found so much relevant in my day to day life I could hardly believe it. There are some real thought provoking criticisms of our modern world presented here. I like the frank style of writing, and I deeply appreciate Vonnegut's bitterly sarcastic musings: "Then again, I am a monopolar depressive descended from monopolar depressives. That's how come I write so good." Give us a break, Mr. Trout. READ IT.

Summary: Gutsy and Different: One of my favorite Vonnegut titles
Comment: Timequake is... different. You won't find another story out there that is constructed like this one. Why do I give it 5 stars? Because that takes guts, but mostly because vonnegut pulls it off. It's a very difficult thing to change the underlying form of storytelling... most readers don't like it. They get caught up in the presentation of the story and forget to pay attention to what's happening.

Well, Timequake is non-linear and wild. It is chaotic, but not in the sense of being poorly written. It's chaotic in the same way that a handful of diamonds thrown into a salad mixer would be chaotic; fascinating, somewhat worrisome, and in an odd way brilliant.

I would recommend Timequake to Vonnegut fans, certainly, but also to any serious reader or writer of fiction. Use it as a lesson in thinking outside of the norm. There's a lot to be learned from Timequake.
