Summary: A mystery-suspense novel worth reading...
Comment: The Firm is a mystery novel about a young lawyer, Mitch McDeere. Raised in a poor family, Mitch worked very hard and graduated among the top three at Harvard Law School. After graduating and marrying, Mitch was still poor¡X until one day he is offered a job from Bendini, Lambert, and Locke, a Memphis law firm. Not only is he offered a high salary, but he is also given a brand new BMW, a new house, and many bonuses. It was the dream job of every lawyer. It all seemed too good to be true¡Xand it was. After a couple weeks in the firm, Mitch becomes suspicious and he starts to noticesome mysterious clues. For one, the job wasn¡¦t all that great, but there was a turnover rate of zero. Secondly, two executive partners go on a trip to the Grand Caymans are killed. And lastly, after an FBI detective approaches him, questioning and warning him about Bendini, Locke, and Lambert, he is sure there is a secret within the firm, and is determined to find out¡Xeven if it costs his life. After some spying and eavesdropping, Mitch learns the truth. The so-called ¡§law firm¡¨ he works in is actually owned by and part of the most powerful mafia in Chicago (how ironic). However, there are only two ways to get out of this firm. The first option is to keep this secret for your whole life and to work in the firm until you retire. The second option is to die. The mafia and the senior partners of the firm are getting suspicious of what Mitch knows, and he either has to make his decision soon or possibly think of another way out.

I loved The Firm because it was full of suspense and I had no idea what was going to happen next, which explains why I stayed up the whole night reading the entire book in order to see what happens in the end.

Summary: too much, too soon
Comment: The book is gripping at the start with its theme of a mysteriously sinister law firm, but Grisham reveals everything too soon rather than let the suspense build. From then on its just a thriller, with the good guys in white hats and bad guys in black. It would have been nicer if there had been some surprises - some bad guys turn out to be heros, that king of thing.
