Summary: Enjoyable Romance with Depth
Comment: I am a long-time Mary Balogh fan -- when I see her name on a new book, I don't even bother to read about it, I just buy it because I know that it will be good. This book is no exception. She does an excellent job with plot and characterization in this book, and I am pleased that a fine Regency romance writer finally has received the recognition she deserves with a hardback version of her work. I think she captures perfectly the familial expectations of a ducal heir in that time, as well as how few options were open to women in Regency England.

I disagree entirely with the reviewers whose only quibble with this book is that it takes a long time for Jane and Jocelyn to resolve their differences and hurt feelings; quite the contrary, I found this to be entirely realistic, both for these characters and for human nature in general.

Another thing I appreciate that Balogh always does in her books is to remain true to the period in which she is writing, and she doesn't insert contemporary language, thoughts, or manners into her work.

Bravo, Mary! Keep up the good work!

Summary: Deceit and mistrust healed by love
Comment: When Jane Ingleby boldly interrupts a duel one early morning in Hyde Park, she doesn't expect one of the duellers to be so angry with her that he would force her to nurse the wound immobilising him after his adversary shot him in the leg. Jocelyn Dudley, Duke of Tresham, holds her responsible for his wound, and his annoyance increases when she provokes him and refuses to be treated as a simple servant. When Jane becomes his mistress, neither of them knows that their relationship will be different from what they both expect.

But treating her like another mistress isn't possible for Jocelyn. He trusts her, confides in her, opens his heart to her, without suspecting that Jane is hiding many things from him, things that could compromise their relationship.

Mary Balogh has a way to bare her characters' inner thoughts that is poignant and makes perfect sense. Misunderstandings keep them apart without artificial dramas. She also knows how to write love scenes between two characters and make them so very different according to the state of their relationship. More Than a Mistress includes a love scene of sheer romanticism and a later one that reflects the different emotions driving both heroes. A lot of the characters' state of mind is revealed through those two scenes, as well as another greatly powerful one where, after days of coldness between Jane and Jocelyn, a wordless exchange reminds us all of the unspoken feelings binding them.

There was only one regret I had about this book: I wish the main element of the outcome (which I won't reveal to avoid spoilers) had been showed "live" and not just told about. It seemed out of the blue and out of sync with the way the characters behaved a few minutes before what they knew (and what the reader didn't know) was revealed. I would also have wished for an epilogue; an unpublished one is thankfully available on Mary Balogh's site, and it made up for that small complaint of mine. :)

As a whole, a delightful story, full of humour and poignancy, and certainly one I'll enjoy reading several times.

Summary: Ooohh lala ! Boy did I love Tresh!!
Comment: This book is too good for words! It was so wonderful to watch while Jane slowly crumbled away the wall around Tresh's heart! What a beautiful story. And when he wept on her I was almost weeping as well. Any woman who can bring a big, manly giant like him down is a good woman indeed!! The only thing that really irked me was his name. Jocelyn..for a man? It was just sooo effeminate for a man whos father hated all things effeminate in his sons. Any time I saw his name, in my mind, I changed it to Tresh!! LOL But other than that, this book is wonderful, absolutely spellbinding! i couldnt put it down!
