Summary: Kingdom of Heaven vs. Republic of Heaven
Comment: *~The Amber Spyglass~*, by Phillip Pullman, is a breathtaking novel about love, symbolism, and the quest for the purpose of exsistance.
To those readers, like me, who enjoy science fiction and fantasy, this golden instant classic is a true tresure. For those of you that like discussions about political issues, religion, or current beliefs, this is just a spark to light your candle of knowledge and wonderment.
As I have heard and read from previous reviewers, some do not like this trilogy for the same reasons Harry Potter has been accused. I myself do not favor them much, but it is more because of J.K. Rowling's writing style than anything else. It is true Pullman's references to G-d, church and angels are not Christian, but there are a couple of "good" angels in the story that help Lyra and Will from time to time. Also: Pullman did not write this story to be taken literally. The author uses such terms as "The Kingdom of Heaven" as a symbol for how the Church had such a dominant power over people's lives. "Dust/Shadows/sraf" is symbolistic for the spritual or mystical side of matter; small particals that each of us possess determine our destinies and make us kindred to each other. This, of course, is only my interpretation of what Dust is.
Pullman's writing is flawless, and surpasses all the other *~His Dark Materials~* and (as much as I have read) all his other books. I recommend this book to anyone who is still seaching for the meaning in life, as we all are, and what it truly means to be a person.

Summary: A Classic Series, and A Great Ending
Comment: I've seen a lot of fantasy series compared to classic works, and read more than a few. After a while, a blurb on a series comparing it to, say "Lord of the Rings" has become meaningless to me. There are, I think, many good books in the fantasy and YA fantasy genre, but very few great ones. "His Dark Materials" is one of the few fantasy series I have seen compared to the classics which truly deserves to be. It is truly an outstanding work of fiction, and will be remembered far longer than many others which are getting more press and "hype".
In terms of age level this series is definitely aimed at an older group than say, Harry Potter or the Chronicles of Narnia. It is more truly a YA or perhaps even adult book, despite its being marketed as a children's one. Themse include quantum physics, the existence of God, original sin, Heaven, the afterlife, and adolescence. And they all tie neatly together.
I recommend this entire series without reservation to anyone who truly wants to read a new classic in the fantasy genre. And Pullman finishes the series in a superb manner with the closing volume, "The Amber Spyglass."

Summary: more than a children's book
Comment: This is one of the greatest books I have ever read. In some magical way, this is a book that, through the stories of several very original characters is able to address God, love, maturity, humanity's history and meaning, and countless other wonderful topics. This was more than just a novel to me; it has shaped my philosophy and way of looking at the world. Thos who say that this is a children's book a la "Harry Potter" are wrong. Maybe to the young readers, that's how it is, but I'm 14 and I was able to see that this is more than an easy, pleasurable fantasy like Harry Potter. This is a novel but also a manuscript of Pullman's philosophies and views. It is an extraordinary book that operates on a truly incredible, epic scale. From the first book, things just built up and built up, and here it all comes together in a brilliant, and very sad, climax. Read the series. You'll be enlightened.
