Summary: RE: Not Necessarily Better, Not Necessarily Worse
Comment: I've always loved the movie and glad I finally read the book. The book does expand a lot on Tangina and her journey into the spiritual realm. However, to be honest, while reading I found myself kind of getting annoyed with Tangina sometimes and the bizarre descriptions of her visits into the next dimension. At the same time, I love Tangina in the movie as you get a smaller dose of her. Who doesn't love her line from the top of the stairs: "I AM! I just don't like tricky answers." (??)
The thing that is interesting about the book is that it appears based on the original transcript. So, you get to read a lot of the original lines that were planned, and the way the movie was originally to be rearranged. I can see why they changed the original script -- the movie's layout and dialogue are just more sharper and better-suited for cinema.
If your a die-hard fan of the movie, than I would read the book. It really is not that long of a read, although the details written on Tangina probably made the book more an acceptable length. It is nice getting the intimate details behind the ideas and theology presented in the movie. Personally, I will definitely have an expanded, more completed mindset when I watch the movie from now on.

Summary: Hauntingly tight read!
Comment: Strobes, creepy voices, and crawling steaks were fun on-screen. But much was missing (or just badly acted by secondaries).
Much is explained in the book, and more detail is given as to the nature of the attacks on this fictional family. Taking nothing away from the awesome acting of the primaries JoBeth Williams and Craig T. Nelson, the book lends more depth to the little girl, Carol Ann, the midget psychic who comes tot he family's rescue, and the paranormal investigation team who stays at the house. Each incident is deepened and expanded, providing more true fear material and less photographic shock.
More robust than the movie, and classically chilling, Poltergeist is a must-have for horror enthusiasts.
Just shut the closet door before you read!

Summary: Were liberties taken with the story?
Comment: The early drafts of the script for Poltergeist were either a chaotic mess or James Kahn took some liberties with the main story. Either way the results are not nearly as effective as some of the rave reviews would lead you to believe.
