Summary: "Real" ghosts
Comment: It is rare to find a book that purports to relate "true" ghost stories that does so in a way that neither accepts nor denies out of hand the veracity of the stories. Sources are quoted, stories related, narratives spun without any editorial voice saying "this is folklore" or "this is fact". I guess at my age I don't need to know whether ghosts really exist to be fascinated in them. As Carl Sagan said, (paraphrased) "I am tolerant of ambiguity in this regard". I have many books on my nightstand, but somehow "Haunted Heartland" always works it's way to the top of the stack, upside down, open to a story that I've probably already read 7 times, and can't wait to continue at bed time. This is the perfect nightstand book, but I'd recommend you buy a nightlight to go with it. You'll need it... PS - I have ordered the second book from these authors on this topic, titled "Haunted America", and am waiting for the UPS truck to pull up!

Summary: Run-of-the-mill, supernatural yarn.
Comment: Having read (and loved) Scott and Norman's "Historic Haunted America", I was, needless to say, really let down by "Haunted Heartland". The anecdotes were much shorter (some not even making it past one page) and rather abrupt. The "stories", at best, are mildy scary, and at worst, horribly tedious. The section devoted to ghost ships of the Great Lakes was particularly trying. Most of these anecdotes were spent relating cliched ghost activities (i.e. lights turning off and on, heavy breathing, footsteps etc), instead of focusing on the story of the inhabitants or the ghosts itself. "Historic" spent a greater amount of time fleshing out the "hows" and "whys" of the ghost stories (who the ghost is believed to be, why they are believed to be haunting the place), whereas "Heartland" spends time focusing on the "wheres" and "whats" without delving into the background and experiences of the people involved, alive or dead. I bought this book hoping for a few good ghost stories with emotion and character; instead, I got what was essentially a bunch of campfire stories haphazardly thrown together into a 200+ page book. Save your money for (the superior) "Historic Haunted America".

Summary: huntings
Comment: This book really shows how there are really hunting's that go on around and that there are many different aspects as to why this happens. This book I will have to say is one of the best I have read on the topic of hunting's and this I really liked. I still say that this really shows how different places are and the history behind the places.
