Summary: Best book I've read in years
Comment: I've looked for a novel to compare to Shogun for years and I'd almost given up when I found Immortal Dragon. I've never known anything about Vietnam except the modern day war. To read of the beauty of the country, the people and customs in their original state is incredible. The way he's written about France in the 1800's is also interesting and the reader can directly compare the two cultures with the main character of the book living in both places.
The way I judge a book is it has to be written so that it's impossible to put down, have an intellectual perspective, not silly romance type of writing, and have the details be true from authentic research and this book fits all three criteria. The Eastern religion captivates me and I even found myself underlining some of the most thought provoking parts. It has great romance that's realistic, not anything like a romance novel.
So if you like history novels with depth but fun to read plots, go for this one for sure.

Summary: Full of intrigue and seduction!
Comment: At first glance The Immortal Dragon appears to be bordering on a romance novel, but as one of the many lessons taught to the characters in the novel, things aren't always what they seem. The novel weaves in and out of the lives of a dying Vietnamese dynasty, and one unsuspecting Frenchman. In a twist of fate, the future of Vietnam is handed to a Vietnamese princess and her French husband. Along with the seduction and intrigue contained in this novel is horrible tragedy, these elements put together create a novel that is hard to put down.
