Summary: A Scientific and Practical Investigation of Human Memory
Comment: I am currently enrolled in a PhD program in clinical psychology. In the interest of being a well-informed clinician, I decided to read Dr. Jones' book on memory. Dr. Jones' book, which I found to be both informative and fascinating, accomplished many things in just over 200 pages. The reader is guided through the available scientific research on memory, separating fact from fiction- this is a real eye opener! Many techniques currently being used in the clinical setting are not supported by sound science. The different theories on how memory actually works are also discussed and analyzed. In the closing chapters of the book, the pages in which I took the most interest, the author makes the important step of explaining how current scientific knowledge in memory can assist therapists in the real world. The book ends with a historical sketch of the field of psychology and a plea, with suggestions, for clinical and experimental psychologists to work more harmoniously for the mutual benefit of both parties and the field of psychology. I highly recommend this extremely well written and illuminating book.
